Greenhouse Operations Sub-Hub Lead- Marana, AZ
Your Tasks And Responsibilities
This position is responsible for leading Bayer’s Greenhouse Operations at the Marana site, encompassing agronomic practices, climate control, equipment maintenance, and operational reliability. The incumbent will leverage cutting-edge technologies and innovations to ensure the production of high-quality seeds, supporting advanced breeding strategies and the Crop Science R&D organization in delivering new corn biotech and breeding products to farmers.
The successful candidate will serve as a Visionary, Architect, Catalyst, and Coach, guiding outcome-driven teams to fulfill the site’s mission to deliver products in an end-to-end vision.
The primary responsibilities of this role, Greenhouse Operations Sub Hub Lead, are:
- Provide leadership to a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, operations guides, operations associates, seed technicians, and greenhouse equipment specialists, overseeing daily growing operations including agronomics, pest and disease management, climate regulation, and nutrient and irrigation program;
- Drive innovation within greenhouse operations to enable novel breeding methodologies. Foster a culture of continuous improvement focused on technological advancement and automation in plant care;
- Oversee site facilities management and equipment reliability programs in collaboration with third-party service providers. Lead strategic initiatives to enhance equipment functionality and operational efficiency;
- Ensure compliance with internal, state, and federal regulations regarding pesticide usage. Champion integrated pest management strategies, including the adoption of biologicals, plant growth regulators (PGRs), and other innovative solutions;
- Promote a strong culture of Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), regulatory compliance, quality assurance, and agile performance. Ensure team adherence to documentation and training standards;
- Maintain active communication with internal protected culture experts, external suppliers, and industry consultants to stay abreast of best practices and emerging trends. Cultivate a network of experts for shared learning and collaboration;
- Lead complex problem-solving and prioritize competing demands in a dynamic environment. Utilize data-driven root cause analysis to support strategic decision-making and operational excellence;
- Determine resource requirements for protected culture and site operations. Share responsibility for site financial performance, including the execution of capital and expense projects within budget;
- Foster an inclusive site culture that values diversity, encourages creativity, and empowers employees to bring their authentic selves to work;
- Coordinate and lead community engagement initiatives to promote positive relations and outreach efforts;
- Position entails driving a company vehicle. This may include being required to drive greater than 5,000 business miles annually in a personal, pooled, or rented vehicle OR being expected to frequently drive a pooled car as part of your job duties – regardless of mileage.
Bayer Seeks An Incumbent Who Possesses The Following:
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. with a minimum of 8 years, M.S. with 12 years, or B.S. with 15 years of relevant experience in greenhouse management, protected culture cultivation, and operations;
- Demonstrated expertise in influencing, coaching, facilitation, conflict resolution, and relationship management;
- Minimum of 5 years of formal leadership experience managing teams;
- Proven ability to manage change, prioritize effectively, and navigate complexity, ambiguity, and uncertainty;
- Experience leading cross-functional teams without direct reporting lines;
- Strong decision-making skills with a results-oriented mindset;
- Excellent English written, visual, and verbal communication skills for internal and external representation of Breeding and DSO values;
- Passion for emerging agricultural trends and technologies;
- Proficiency in MS Office and scientific data analysis software, with the ability to quickly learn new tools;
- Valid driver’s license; (in order to be eligible to drive a company car, your driving record must meet guidelines based on the company’s risk screening for hiring drivers – MVR will be reviewed as part of pre-employment screening);
- Willingness to travel up to 10% domestically;
- Comfortable working eventually in high heat index environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Academic background in Agronomy, Crop Science, Plant Physiology, or related disciplines, with relevant experience in greenhouse cultivation and operations;
- Expertise in modern breeding methodologies, including genomics, molecular biology, automation, and phenomics;
- Experience with production systems such as Toyota Production System (TPS), One PSS, lean manufacturing, or similar frameworks.
- Domestic relocation may be provided for this role.

Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $144,539.20 - $216,808.80. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc. This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant's location, market data/ranges, an applicant's skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
