SketchUp is one of the most popular 3D modeling and design tools in the world. Today, hundreds of thousands of architects, engineers, contractors, woodworkers, artists, and other creatives use SketchUp Pro, LayOut, Sefaira, and 3D Warehouse to design everything from transit centers with excellent energy performance and everything in between.
Role Overview:
As our technical writer, you’ll be helping with our transformational efforts to become a more customer-centric organization. We’re looking for someone with a passion to understand our customers and enable teams across the organization to deliver a compelling story for how our products can come alive and deliver value for the customer. We’re looking for someone who is passionate about writing and can learn the complexity of our product and translate its use into content that helps users onboard or master our SketchUp offerings with ease.
The Technical Writer will help build a resource for customers and teammates to learn concepts from basic to advanced. You'll be responsible for collaborating with different team members to learn the most effective way convey new tools and concepts to our users through content. Success in this position involves a strong drive to make SketchUp accessible to everyone as they are getting started or continuing their SketchUp education mastery.
Measures Of Success:
- Consistently demonstrate the ability to interpret complex technical descriptions into user-friendly explanations.
- Demonstrate the ability to gather information from multiple sources, such as developers, Product managers, and CX teams, and create clear descriptions, workflows, and documentation.
- Provide new product input, testing, and release involvement based on your understanding of customers.
- Determine end-user requirements needed to easily understand the concept
- Cross-collaborate with multiple teams and stakeholders for peer review and accuracy
- Create high-quality documentation such as HC articles, FAQ’s, step-by-step guides, and user manuals to support users, business partners, and internal teams
- Deliver content on projects effectively to meet deadlines and quality standards
- Maintain and regularly update documentation to ensure it is complete, accurate and maintains trust levels
- Understand and apply our style guide and best practices for content creation
- Employ diagrams, drawings, and other visuals to convey strategy
- Review documentation created by others to provide feedback and edits to improve the content and maintain consistency across writers.
- Ensure consistent language, format, voice, style, and tone for all documentation, internal and external.
- Generate innovative ideas and strategies for new Help Center content and workflow solutions
- Consistently meet or exceed target time-to-publish goals for new content
- Gather and analyze user feedback to continuously improve documentation
- Demonstrate success by achieving specific metrics such as a decrease in support tickets, an increase in AI Help bot traffic (deflection), or an increase in user engagement with new articles.
- Demonstrate powerful use of autonomy, yet remain humble enough to ask for help.
Required Skills And Experience:
- 2-3 years of experience in technical writing and editing for the SaaS industry
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and experience working with content in multiple mediums.
- Proven ability to understand DITA and complete writing assignments in the DITA model
- A customer-centric mindset and a growth mindset, continuing to iterate and learn through experimentation
- Familiar with basic web design concepts, comfortable with basic HTML markup, and able to edit and enter HTML code autonomously from developers.
- Experience with authoring software and CMS publishing (Contentful or Drupal)
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
- Ability to deal with demanding situations and ambiguity, while working independently in a dynamic environment
- Effective at time management and prioritization.
- Communicate and collaborate effectively through multiple channels and with various stakeholders.
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Knowledge of 3D modeling and 3D graphics
- Background in Engineering, Architecture, Design, or Computer Science.
- Experience in operating systems such as Windows, Android, MacOS, iOS, Windows Server
