Position Purpose
Provides leadership in developing the School’s engagement strategy, in support of the School’s Strategic Plan.   Manages key relationships with and between external stakeholders, including alumni and the community - private and corporate).  Builds long-term relationships within the community and raises the School’s visibility within the community. Cultivates philanthropy by fostering relationships with alumni and community partners to strengthen the Development pipeline. Responsible for collaborating with program offices on their initiatives to link alumni and community members with students and professors to support the needs of programs and the educational mission of the School. Works collaboratively with program offices in establishing a bridging strategy from students to alumni and community. 

In This Role, You Will:

  • Leads the development of strategic direction for alumni relations and community engagement by setting goals and priorities, implementation plans and timelines as well as identifying key performance indicators. Ensures execution of the alumni relations and community engagement outreach strategies. 
  • Plays a vital role in cultivating philanthropy to support the Development pipeline by building and strengthening relationships with alumni and community partners, developing targeted engagement strategies, and collaborating closely with advancement colleagues to identify and steward potential donors, thereby increasing support and ensuring a robust flow of prospects for fundraising initiatives.
  • Elaborates and manages the alumni and community relations budget to ensure the optimal use of resources to meet the Telfer School’s priorities and goals effectively and efficiently.
  • Develops alumni and community engagement strategies in support of the School’s positioning strategy, to forge new relationships with public and private sector organizations to increase visibility of the Telfer School of Management and increase the engagement of alumni and members of the community with the School, its students and professors.
  • Provides expert advice and guidance to senior executives, directors and managers on alumni relations and community engagement approaches that will ensure optimum results in the promotion of their programs, services and initiatives.
  • Collaborates with Communications and Marketing team to develop and manage all alumni communications and activities.
  • Establishes and builds relationships with a wide range of alumni and external stakeholders locally, regionally, nationally and internationally (i.e. Ottawa, Toronto, New York and Montreal).
  • In collaboration with program offices, develops and implements a student-to-alumni bridging strategy.
  • Serves as liaison to the Telfer United Alumni Association President and maintains active role as Voting Member of the Association. Supports and amplifies the Association’s mandate and activities. Provides guidance and strategic linkages between the School’s goals and the Associations’ efforts.
  • Promotes opportunities and recruits high profile volunteers for events such as alumni receptions, conferences, honorable distinctions and appointments.
  • Creates and oversees themed alumni gatherings and outreach across various segments and industries. Articulates and champions city-specific alumni strategies, events and engagement.
  • Directs all aspects of human resources management of team members including recruitment, training and development, performance management, resource planning, goal setting, discipline etc. Ensures the team has the training and tools needed to do their jobs efficiently and effectively. Implements a functional structure to ensure staff are well coordinated and efficiently organized. Leads a team culture that focuses on continuous improvement, anticipating needs of internal and external stakeholders and prioritizes service excellence. 

In This Role, You Will:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A master’s degree is considered an asset.
  • 10 years of progressive experience in the field of alumni relations, preferably within the higher education setting 
  • Extensive experience in the development and implementation of engagement strategies. 
  • Seasoned individual with demonstrated ability in negotiation, problem solving, priority setting and meeting deadlines.
  • Proven abilities in building partnerships and/or collaborative working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and under pressure, adapt easily and rapidly and use excellent judgment and discretion.
  • Commitment to achieving the highest quality results and excellence in stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Have demonstrated initiative, autonomy and excellent leadership skills to foster commitment and co-operation within the team.
  • Experience in public speaking and public relations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills (written and verbal) in English and French
