Junior Cybersecurity Operations EngineerJob Description
You will join the SUSE Cyber Security team as a junior engineer, focusing on Security Operations for SUSE. You'll contribute to maintaining and improving the security posture of SUSE's cloud-based and on-premise infrastructure while learning from experienced team members. This role offers excellent growth opportunities in an integrated team environment with exposure to various security disciplines.
Responsibilities
- Assist in operating and maintaining SUSE Security stack components including SIEM, EDR, VMDR, and email protection systems
- Support incident response activities and help with asset and vulnerability management tasks under senior guidance
- Learn to identify and analyze security events, alerts, and potential threats
- Help improve existing security workflows and processes with guidance from senior team members
- Participate in automation projects for routine security tasks using scripting
- Assist in developing and maintaining integrations between security tools and corporate systems
- Support vulnerability scanning initiatives and help interpret scan results
- Participate in security hardening efforts and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
- Collaborate effectively within a geographically distributed team environment
- Learn to provide security guidance to business functions and users with team support
- Contribute to documentation and knowledge sharing within the team
- Participate in root cause analysis activities for security incidents
Knowledge And Skills:
- Basic understanding of cloud security concepts and principles
- Familiarity with AWS security services (Security Groups, IAM, basic S3 permissions); exposure to GCP or Azure is a plus
- Foundational knowledge of vulnerability assessment concepts and common tools
- Basic scripting abilities (Python preferred, but bash or PowerShell acceptable)
- Understanding of fundamental incident response processes
- Knowledge of basic cyber attack methodologies and the attack lifecycle
- Solid understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP/HTTPS)
- Basic knowledge of operating system security concepts (Windows/Linux)
- Understanding of email security basics
- Willingness to learn new technologies and security tools quickly
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively
Education And Experience Required:
- 1-3 years of relevant cybersecurity experience (internships and lab experience count)
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or related field preferred
- Entry-level security certifications (Security+, Network+, CySA+) are a plus but not required
- Basic hands-on experience with at least one scripting language (Python, bash, PowerShell)
- Demonstrated interest in cybersecurity through coursework, personal projects, or certifications
- Strong eagerness to learn and grow in the cybersecurity field
