Job Title: Oncology Financial Navigator

Location: Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center

Reports To: Business Manager

Position Summary:

The Oncology Financial Navigator plays a vital role in supporting oncology patients and their families as they navigate the financial challenges of cancer care. This position involves assessing financial needs, educating patients about insurance and assistance programs, coordinating with clinical and billing teams, and ensuring timely access to cost-effective care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess financial needs of every new oncology patient within 2 business days of referral and during major treatment changes
  • Educate patients on insurance benefits, out-of-pocket costs, and available financial assistance programs
  • Coordinate with nurses, social workers, pharmacy, and revenue cycle teams to align financial and treatment plans
  • Participate in weekly multidisciplinary huddles to identify high-risk patients and coordinate follow-up actions
  • Serve as an internal resource on insurance rules, assistance programs, and provide just-in-time education to staff
  • Mentor new financial navigators or interns and share best practices
  • Maintain ≥ 95% documentation accuracy in EMR and tracking systems for insurance benefits, authorizations, and aid applications
  • Monitor and report financial navigation quality metrics (e.g., aid approval times, patient assistance rates, reduction in financial toxicity scores)
  • Conduct benefit investigations and deliver cost-of-care estimates in plain language
  • Identify and apply for manufacturer copay cards, foundation grants, PAPs, and travel/lodging support
  • Reconcile assistance outcomes with patient accounts and work with billing to ensure correct application of awards
  • Screen patients for Medicaid, MSPs, ACA special enrollment, and hospital charity care
  • Participate in peer reviews, process audits, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Stay current on legislative/payer policy changes and disseminate quarterly updates to the team
  • Complete a minimum of 15 CE hours annually in financial counseling, reimbursement, or patient advocacy topics
  • Uphold strict confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA, EMTALA, CMS, and other applicable regulations
  • Use trauma-informed, culturally sensitive communication to support patients with varying health literacy levels
  • Respond to all financial inquiries within one business day and document resolution paths
Qualifications

  • Bachelor’S Degree Required

  • Master’S Degree Preferred

  • ACS LION Certification preferred
  • 2 to 5 years of experience in project management, program development in a healthcare setting, or performance improvement roles

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of oncology reimbursement, insurance benefits, and assistance program eligibility
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical environment
  • Demonstrated reliability with attendance and flexibility during peak periods (e.g., open enrollment)
  • Proficiency in using EMR systems and tracking dashboards
