Job Description:

Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine is recruiting for a Spring 2026 Co-Op for CHO Proteomics, located in Springhouse, PA.

Research & Development Co-Op Overview:

J&J R&D encompasses the development of sophisticated materials, process improvements, risk management and mechanical testing through the development process across all sectors including Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, Consumer and Corporate/Enterprise.

We offer a fast-paced cross-functional, technologically advanced, corporate environment, passionate about developing individual engineering and scientific skills. You will have the opportunity to learn about anatomy, disease states, deformities and the surgical procedure/products used to address these conditions.

Life As An R&D Co-Op:

The R&D Co-op program provides each student with real-life hands-on experience, coaching and mentoring, networking opportunities, as well as the opportunity to meet people from various schools throughout the country. Each Co-op will be assigned to a single function with a specific project for the 6-month term.

The typical Co-op term is from Jan 2026– Jun 2026.

Key Responsibilities:

We, the proteomics team at CEAS, offer excellent opportunities to advance the understanding of CHO (Chinese Hamster Ovary) cells, the primary host for biologics production. Our goal is to identify biological pathways and biomarkers from CHO proteome studies as cell engineering targets to enhance Qp, titer, and the quality of large molecule products. We aim to accomplish this using cutting-edge quantitative proteomics technologies, including single-cell proteomics and chemo-proteomics. Therefore, we are seeking a CO-OP who is enthusiastic about this role and can contribute to our proteomics initiatives.

Specifically, the upcoming CO-OP in our proteomics team will focus on method development for exploring protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks in phenotypically distinct CHO clones. Exploring PPIs is an essential part of understanding biological mechanisms, as interactions between proteins and enzymes drive downstream cellular pathways and lead to distinct cell phenotypes. Compared to other discovery efforts, PPIs in CHO cells are still poorly understood, especially regarding their links to biologics production. Therefore, we will implement diverse chemo-proteomics methods, including XL-MS and proximity labeling (PL) technologies, within our research program to identify key proteins regulating these biological pathways as potential engineering targets.

In this role, the Co-Op will...

  • Optimize sample preparation workflows for both XL-MS and PL technologies, including labeling conditions (reagent amounts, buffers, and labeling times) and on-bead tryptic digestion conditions. Through LC-MS/MS analysis, the CHO cell proteins can be mapped to interact with biologics during their expression and identify the distinct protein interactions between high-producibility and low-producibility CHO clones.
  • Learn state-of-the-art chemo-proteomics methods, operate advanced MS instrumentation, and interpret the resulting data.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental results using analytical and statistical techniques. Actively participate in weekly meetings with internal and external collaborators.
  • Participate in technical discussions on design of experiments to fill gaps in knowledge.
  • Maintain a laboratory notebook and other technical documents according to required guidelines.
  • Provide other project support as needed.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Biology, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and related majors are preferred.
  • Candidates must be actively enrolled in an accredited University for the duration of a co-op assignment pursuing a Master’s, or PhD degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.8 is required.

Experience And Skills:

Required:

  • Candidate must be pursuing a PhD or Master's degree with over 2 years of research and lab experience.
  • Candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. and must not require sponsorship for employment visa status now or in the future (e.g., FI, H1-B status)
  • Ability to demonstrate strong analytical and quantitative skills is required
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and leadership skills are preferred
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and initiatives while performing results
  • Must be a self-starter works independently while supplying to the team goals
  • Proven leadership/participation with campus programs and/or community service activities is desired

Preferred:

  • Students with experience in proteomics (e.g., sample preparation, LC-MS/MS data acquisition, processing, and interpretation).
  • Students with experience in LC-MS/MS-based analysis of biological samples.
  • Students with basic laboratory skills and experience in research, experimental design & execution, and data analysis preferred.
