Desired Length of Employment: Employment to be ongoing until graduation.
Pay Rate: $12.00.
Key Components:
The ideal candidate for this position has prior education in the areas of Religion, Theology, or Biblical Studies. Students enrolled at Truett Theological Seminary are preferred, but other majors and courses of study are not excluded. The duties of each Fellow will be determined by the Director or AD they report to and may include any or all of the following tasks:
Assists the Acquisitions Team in all aspects of acquiring new books for publication.
The Patterson Publishing Fellow:
- (1) monitors the Press’s acquisitions email account, evaluating unsolicited proposals;
- (2) manages the Press’s acquisitions tracker;
- (3) assists in coordinating the peer review process for projects under consideration; and
- (4) assists in preparing for Baylor’s University Press Committee meetings, completing essential clerical work and file maintenance before and after;
- (5) other duties as assigned.
Assists the Director of the Press and the AD of Acquisitions during the development process for projects acquired for publication.
The Patterson Publishing Fellow:
- (1) reviews manuscripts during development, making suggestions for improvement;
- (2) assists in researching subventions and grants for offsetting production expenses;
- (3) drafts seed copy for use in marketing materials and initiates the editorial process for finalizing seed copy; and, together with the acquisitions editor,
- (4) performs the final check of the manuscript before handoff;
- (5) other duties as assigned.
As able, and at the discretion of the Director of the Press, participates in regular Press meetings (pub board, positioning, cover design, post-UPC, and list presentation), represents the Press at local (on-campus) events, attends and participates in acquisitions conversations with authors, and staffs the BUP exhibit at annual conferences within the contiguous US.
Pay begins at $12.00. Higher pay may be considered if the applicant has considerable prior experience or qualifications that will allow them to contribute in ways that exceed the duties and responsibilities listed.
- In a student employee capacity, may perform or assist with specialized business or operational functions that contribute to departmental goals and initiatives.
