The Surgical Technologist is an allied health professional who supports the surgical team in delivering care to patients in a variety of settings. They assist in preparing surgical areas, managing instruments and supplies, and ensuring sterile technique under the supervision of licensed surgical staff. This role is suitable for individuals beginning their careers in surgical services or transitioning from other clinical or patient care roles.

The Surgical Technician responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assists in maintaining the sterile field under supervision.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the procedure and supports surgical team needs.
  • Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure.
  • Scrubs, gowns, and gloves appropriately.
  • Sets up sterile tables with instruments and supplies under guidance.
  • Performs instrument and sponge counts with the circulator.
  • Passes instruments during surgery.
  • Aids in cleaning and preparing instruments for sterilization.
  • Supports terminal cleaning of rooms and preparation for the next procedure.
  • May retrieve and transport medications (no preparation or administration).

For Lakeside Women's Hospital and INTEGRIS Health Grove Hospital

  • Ensures all instruments are decontaminated and stored using the appropriate processes, solutions, supplies and equipment.
  • Completes the necessary procedures for sterilization per manufacturer instructions and hospital procedures.
  • Responsible for preparing and documenting sterilization process charts, logs and records per hospital and regulatory guidelines.
  • Completes high level disinfectant process education annually, as applicable.

Reports to the assigned supervisor and Clinical Director.

This position may have additional or varied physical demand and/or respiratory fit test requirements. Please consult the Physical Demands Project SharePoint site or contact Risk Management/Employee Health for additional information. High exposure to hazardous risks and contaminants, including potential for exposure to infections and communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, electrical equipment, lasers, radiology and fluoroscopy equipment, needle sticks, suction splashing, chemicals, cleaning solvents - Stat IV, sterilization chemicals, hexacholorophate, betadine and sharps and wet floors. Temperatures may vary in procedure environment, may stand on hard floors or platforms, exposed to a variety of interruptions, odor, and must wear universal protective clothing. May be required to work overtime, late shifts, weekends and be on call. Potential for bodily injury related to lifting and incidents of workplace violence. Hazards will be minimized if universal safety procedures are followed.

Required Qualifications

License/Certifications:

  • NCCT-TS-C (Tech in Surgery-Certified) OR AST-CST (Certified Surgical Tech)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) Issued by American Red Cross or American Heart Association within 60 days of hire

Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbal/written).

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

  • Experience in a direct patient care or clinical support role (e.g., medical assistant, patient care tech, EMT, or similar)
  • Lakeside Women's Hospital: Knowledge of preparing and sterilizing surgical instruments and supplies 
  • Radiology/Cath Lab Only: 6 months experience in angiography preferred. Experience with PTA and PTCA, laser PTA/PTCA, and intra aortic balloon pump
