Job Summary

Responsible for the delivery of quality patient care, working under the indirect or direct supervision of a Rheumatologist as licensure requires. Provides evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management for patients with autoimmune, inflammatory, and musculoskeletal conditions. This role emphasizes chronic disease management, infusion oversight, collaborative care, and patient education.

Duties And Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Lead and collaborate with a team of healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive rheumatology care in clinic and hospital settings, as appropriate.
  • Conduct patient visits, review medical history, perform physical exams, and formulate treatment plans.
  • Order, interpret, and follow up on diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, bone density scans, autoimmune panels, and other rheumatologic imaging.
  • Prescribe, initiate, and monitor disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), biologics, and infusion therapies in accordance with state and federal regulation.
  • Perform joint and soft tissue injections, aspirations, and other minor in-office procedures as credentialed.
  • Recognize and manage acute flares or urgent complications of autoimmune and rheumatologic disease, initiating stabilization and referral when needed.
  • Provide oversight and support for infusion therapy and specialty pharmacy coordination.

Patient & Family Support

  • Educate patients and families about disease processes, treatment options, medication monitoring, infusion safety, and lifestyle modifications.
  • Foster long-term therapeutic relationships for ongoing chronic disease management.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and advocate for patients navigating complex care pathways.

Education & Mentorship

  • Supervise, teach, and mentor medical students, residents, and clinical staff as appropriate.
  • Provide ongoing education and training for nursing staff and medical assistants regarding rheumatology protocols, medication safety, and patient monitoring.

Administrative & Quality Improvement

  • Document encounters, prescribe medications and explain discharge instructions.
  • Work with administrative and medical staff to ensure accurate posting of charges, follow-up on diagnostic testing, and compliance with documentation standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, outcomes tracking and clinic research relevant to rheumatology practice.

Professional Development

  • Stay current with medical advancements, new therapies, clinical guidelines, and evidence-based practice. Maintain continuing medical education (CME) requirements and certifications.
  • Actively engage in quality improvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved School of Physician Assistant Program; successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam.
  • Licensed/Registered as an Advanced Practice Provider.
  • Current Idaho License.
  • BCLS certification required; ACLS preferred.
  • Experience in Rheumatology, Internal Medicine, or related specialty.

Preferred Requirements

  • 3 years as a midlevel practitioner.
  • Bilingual: English and Spanish.
  • Prior experience managing biologic and infusion therapies.
  • Skills/Competencies
  • Effective communication in English, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Strong collaboration and patient-centered care focus.
  • Knowledge of autoimmune diseases, rheumatology medications, and infusion therapy protocols.
  • Ability to manage complex chronic conditions and coordinate multidisciplinary care.
  • Leadership in mentoring, teaching, and supporting staff development.
  • Stays current with medical advancements, new therapies, and professional standards.
  • Ability to make efficient use of Clinical Assistants and Medical Assistants’ skills and abilities.

Physical Requirements

Perceive the nature of sounds by the ear, express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word, perceive characteristics of objects through the eyes, extend arms and hands in any direction, seize, hold, grasp, turn, or otherwise work with hands, pick, pinch, or otherwise work with fingers, perceive such attributes of objects or materials as size, shape, temperature, or texture; and stoop, kneel crouch, and crawl. Must be able to lift 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting, carrying pushing, and pulling of objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Continuous walking and standing. Must be able to identify, match, and distinguish colors.
