Applications are invited for appointment as Research Officer in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Global Health Institute (HKJCGHI) of the School of Public Health (Ref.: 533185), to commence as soon as possible on a one-year temporary or two-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to funding availability and satisfactory performance.

HKU has partnered with International Vaccine Institute (IVI), and The University of Cambridge to establish the HKJCGHI, funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. IVI is a non-profit international organization dedicated to vaccines and vaccination for global health. The Epidemiology Public Health and Impact (EPIC) Unit of IVI coordinates the epidemiology, pandemic preparedness, and capacity building work streams of the HKJCGHI. These areas of work are in sync with HKJCGHI activities of the EPIC Unit in Seoul, South Korea. The appointee will manage the infectious disease surveillance activities of the HKJCGHI and reports to the on-site Program Director. He/She will work closely with senior leadership and scientists of the EPIC unit at IVI in Seoul, South Korea.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Epidemiology, Biology, Microbiology, Laboratory Sciences, Public Health, or a related field, with a strong emphasis on infectious disease surveillance. They should have 5 - 8 years of relevant experience, preferably including fieldwork and work within an international organization, as well as a demonstrated track record of leading research projects and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Prior experience in epidemic and pandemic preparedness and response is highly desirable.

Applicants should demonstrate expertise in designing and implementing epidemiological studies on infectious diseases, including surveillance. Experience in preparing study protocols for submission to ethical review boards is required. Strong laboratory experience is essential, covering sample collection, transportation, pathogen detection, and characterization. They should also have prior experience in training field staff on surveillance and laboratory protocols. Experience with genomic surveillance and analysis methods will be considered a strong asset.

Applicants should demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent written and verbal communication abilities, and the capacity to lead projects and mentor junior staff. Preference will be given to those with prior work experience in international organizations, global health, or public health research, particularly in cross-cultural or multidisciplinary settings.

The appointee will contribute to research activities on infectious diseases and vaccines under the HKJCGHI. Key responsibilities include designing, developing, and implementing infectious disease surveillance studies in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with a particular focus on epidemic and pandemic preparedness and response, as well as on the impact of climate change and antimicrobial resistance. He/She will travel regularly to field sites, including Africa, to provide technical support, conduct trainings, and monitor project implementation. The appointee will lead research projects, manage timelines, and coordinate closely with internal teams and international collaborators. The role also entails publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals and presenting results at scientific conferences and stakeholder meetings.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. The appointment on fixed terms will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme totalling up to 15% of basic salary.
