Job Summary: The Vice President of Surgical and Procedural Services, is a critical leader at Women & Infants Hospital (WIH), reporting directly to the President and Chief Operating Officer and working in close partnership with Clinical Leadership.
- Lead teams of physicians, managers, staff, and operations personnel in the planning, development, and execution of all procedural areas, including the surgical services suite, Endoscopy, Reproductive Endocrinology, Ambulatory Surgery, and Sterile Processing.
- Develop strong collaborative relationships with physicians, nursing, infection prevention and other clinical leaders to shape service design, align operational priorities, and ensure quality outcomes.
- Act as a change agent, driving improvements in people, processes, and technology to achieve WIH Surgical and Procedural Services strategy.
- Oversee the development of strategic, business, and fiscal plans, with measurable goals and metrics to achieve WIH’s fiscal, quality, safety, professional practice, and patient experience objectives.
- Lead governance structures (e.g., Surgical Executive/Block Committee) to ensure transparent block allocation, release/utilization, equitable access, and oversight of capacity.

- Develop and implement a strategic vision for surgical and procedural services, aligning with the overall organizational goals.
- Lead the development of short-term and long-term strategic plans for the surgical service line. (robotics, ambulatory migration, etc.)
- Oversee the planning and allocation of resources for current and future surgical and procedural assets.
- Explicitly lead in dyad with the Chief of Surgery and triad with Anesthesia leadership.
- Ensure the efficient and effective daily operations of the surgical and procedural departments, including the operating room (OR), pre- and post-operative areas, sterile processing, and scheduling.
- Monitor and improve key operational metrics, such as case volume, efficiency, and cost per case. Own KPIs including OR utilization %, first-case on-time starts, turnover times, cancellation rates, add-on access, SPD tray accuracy, and cost per case.
- Oversee the management of the surgical and procedural area budget and capital expenditures.
- Oversee preference card governance and accuracy.
- Monitor and improve operational efficiency, throughput, and bed flow.
- Support initiatives to improve the quality and safety of surgical and procedural care.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous professional development.
- Collaborate with medical directors, surgeons, nurses, and other clinical staff to develop and implement quality improvement programs.
- Ensure compliance with AORN standards, AAMI ST79 sterilization requirements, and Joint Commission/CMS accreditation.
- Promote ERAS adoption and other perioperative clinical pathways.
- Lead quality improvement programs targeting SSI reduction, surgical counts accuracy, and safety culture.
- Manage the surgical and procedural services budget and ensure financial performance goals are met.
- Identify and implement strategies to reduce costs and improve revenue within the surgical and procedural service line.
- Oversee the purchasing of capital equipment and supplies to support surgical and procedural operations.
- Lead surgeon-engaged value analysis and standardization initiatives.
- Oversee preference card-driven supply management and ensure alignment with fiscal goals.
Technology And Analytics
- Optimize perioperative IT platforms (e.g., Epic OpTime) to support scheduling, case costing, and preference card accuracy.
- Develop real-time dashboards and surgeon/anesthesia scorecards.
- Drive innovation through automation (case-cart assembly, RFID tracking, predictive analytics).
Staff Management And Development:
- Provide leadership and guidance to a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other clinical staff.
- Promote a positive and collaborative work environment.
- Support the recruitment, retention, and professional development of surgical and procedural services staff.
- Build a culture of accountability, shared decision-making, and just culture.
- Lead recruitment, retention, pipeline development, and labor relations strategies.
Collaboration And Communication:
- Collaborate with other departments, such as nursing, anesthesiology, and radiology or diagnostic imaging to ensure seamless patient care.
- Communicate effectively with hospital leadership, medical staff, and other stakeholders.
- Build strong relationships with physicians and other key stakeholders.
- Establish regular forums with surgeons and anesthesia to strengthen relationships and resolve issues.
- Ensure transparent communication of performance metrics and initiatives.
Market And Business Development:
- Identify opportunities for growth and expansion of the surgical and procedural service lines.
- Develop and implement marketing strategies to promote surgical and procedural services.
- Monitor the competitive landscape and identify opportunities for strategic partnerships.
Education: Master’s degree in business administration, Healthcare Management, Finance, Nursing, or a related field required.
Experience:
- Ten years of progressive leadership experience in Surgical/Procedural Services ideally in both clinical and business venues.
- Proven results in block governance, SPD quality, supply chain/value analysis, and fiscal performance.
- Experience with professional practice development, fiscal planning, resource allocation.
- Experience building effective multidisciplinary teams and developing positive work relationships with a diverse group of professionals.
- Experience working in an organization of size and complexity comparable to Women and Infants Hospital.
- Labor relations experience strongly recommended.
