Job Description

Northwestern Medicine has an exciting opportunity for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to work in our Interventional Radiology department. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will be working both inpatient (rounding on consults and procedural support) and ambulatory clinic.  

This APP provides patient care at the outpatient clinic, Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital and Northwestern Medicine Grayslake Outpatient Center while ensuring compliance with the established objectives of the organization including preserving the dignity and respect of each patient served. In partnership with physicians and other health care team members, the APP assesses, plans, implements, coordinates, and evaluates care for a specific patient population based on individual scope of practice.

Schedule: Monday - Friday (day time hours) 

  • No holidays/weekends/call 

Locations: Lake Forest Hospital and Grayslake Outpatient Center 

Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrates clinical expertise and expanded knowledge through patient care activities which may include diagnosis and management of a wide range of health problems.
  • Responsible for health outcome of an assigned patient population.
  • Confers with collaborating physician and other health professionals in area of clinical expertise.
  • Develops appropriate educational systems for patients, families and staff in areas of expertise.
  • Mentors graduate students in aspects of advanced practice and patient care.
  • Actively participates in quality improvement and/or research pertinent to area of expertise. 

Responsibilities:

  • Independently performs procedures, such as paracentesis, thoracentesis and ultrasound guided biopsy, at the direction and under the supervision of a physician. Functions as a first assist/scrub role in interventional cases.
  • Receives consults, performs pre-procedural assessment, obtains procedural consents, coordination of care and post-procedural follow-up during inpatient rounds and clinic visits.
  • Collects and synthesizes comprehensive patient data based on utilization of evidence-based assessment techniques and instruments including but not limited to: health and medical history, physical examination, interpretation of diagnostic tests and procedures, and assessment of preventative health screening participation
  • Systematically compares and contrasts clinical findings with normal and abnormal variations in formulating an appropriate differential diagnosis based on the integration of complex assessment data.
  • Demonstrates ability to triage multiple patient’s clinical needs & coordinate clinical care. Demonstrates effective communication with referring physicians, patients/families, Interventional Labs staff and other departments.
  • Completes all required documentation in support of patient care and regulatory compliance.
  • Completes medical charts with appropriate information immediately after seeing the patient.
  • Provides legible information on the medical record. Uses reimbursement codes that are appropriate to the level of care and types of services provided to the patient.
  • Uses prescriptive authority, procedures, referrals, treatments and therapies in accordance with state and federal law and regulations.
  • Functions independently and collaboratively with the physician to provide continuity of health care services for individuals, families or groups.
  • Evaluates the health status, acute episodes of illness, and health care needs of individuals through emphasis on comprehensive history, physical exam and psychosocial assessment
  • Collaborates with the patient/family and other health care team members to develop and update the patient's individualized plan of care.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to hospital administration, physician/providers, nursing staff, front office staff, and patients/families.
  • Maintains a good working relationship within the office.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude.
  • Supports collaboration with clinical colleagues and disciplines outside the neurovascular program to implement plan of care.
  • Exhibits professionalism by performing research, education and leadership in clinical practice.
  • Fosters program development through maintenance of referring provider relationships, participation in clinical research, analysis of clinical outcomes, development of case studies, assessment & planning of program needs with physicians and other related departments.
  • Performs all aspects of daily work in a manner that contributes to and ensures an environment of patient safety and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and functions well in stressful situations. Serves as a role model and coach to others; builds partnerships and teams.
  • Utilizes current research findings to expand clinical knowledge and enhance role performance
  • Engages in formal process seeking feedback regarding one's own practice from patients, peers, professional colleagues and others as identified.
  • Integrates ethical considerations into all areas of practice by discussing risks, benefits and outcomes of healthcare interventions.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in a manner which optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to patients.
  • Responds to patient's needs and concerns as appropriate. Investigates complaints. Works with various resources to find solutions. Acts as a patient advocate.
  • Identifies expected outcomes which promote cost effectiveness, patient satisfaction and continuity amongst providers, which incorporate scientific evidence and are achievable through implementation of evidence based practice.
  • Serves as a teacher/coach/mentor to front-line staff members performing patient management activities.
  • Promotes advancement of the profession through writing, publishing, and group presentation both internally and externally.
  • Disseminates research findings to front-line staff and participates in research activities in partnership with hospital staff.
  • Participates in the identification, development and implementation of innovative quality improvement initiatives to address patient care challenges while maintaining a balance of cost effectiveness and quality of care.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited school/college of nursing OR master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program  
  • Acute care certification required for APRNs (inpatient experience as an NP will be considered in lieu of acute care certification)
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois. Current license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois. Certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by a national certifying body as approved by the Illinois Department of Regulation APRN Board. Once licensed may apply for a controlled substance license and DEA number OR Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program/Current license as a Physician Assistant in the State of Illinois.  Once licensed may apply for a controlled substance license and DEA number
  • Privileged and credentialed through the Northwestern Medicine Medical Staff Office (MSO)
  • Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation – BLS, issued by the American Heart Association 

Preferred:

  • 2 years experience in area of specialty
