Job Description

Assurance and Advisory (A&A), CPP Investments’ internal audit group, provides independent and objective assurance over the design and operating effectiveness of CPP Investments’ governance processes and internal controls. Reporting to a Managing Director, Assurance & Advisory, the Director will be responsible for leading audit engagements, delivering the Audit Plan, and working collaboratively with our business to instill risk and control discipline across CPP Investments’ core activities. This role plays a key leadership role in shaping and executing A&A’s multi-year strategy, ensuring the function delivers meaningful value across the organization. The Director will leverage deep expertise in asset management and operations, risk management, internal controls, and data-driven insights combined with strong business acumen and advanced problem-solving to drive governance enhancements and support enterprise-wide priorities.

Role-Specific Accountabilities:

Assurance & Advisory Execution

  • Lead the planning, scoping, objectives setting, scheduling, and development of work programs under the direction of the Managing Director and in alignment with the Audit Plan.
  • Identify risks and controls, appropriately assessing risk and concluding on control effectiveness to evaluate the impact on CPP Investments’ objectives and compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Exercise independent judgment and assess key and emerging risks, identifying control weaknesses and opportunities for improvement while recommending practical corrective actions.
  • Ensure audit and advisory engagements are completed objectively, professionally, on time, and within budget, in accordance with corporate and industry audit standards.
  • Apply a continuous improvement mindset by identifying opportunities to use data and technology to generate insights and improve the efficiency of audit processes.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to support shorter, more targeted audits.
  • Demonstrate agility by anticipating and adapting approaches to create value.

Business Partnership

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring a strong understanding of the business and optimal value from A&A’s work.
  • Role-model our “no surprises” approach and maintain transparency with management.
  • Embed enterprise-wide priorities into A&A, serving as a connector across the organization.
  • Provide ongoing thought leadership and deliver insights beyond the scope of individual audits.

People Leadership

  • Provide coaching, guidance, and support to junior auditors, ensuring high-quality deliverables.
  • Oversee team members in planning and executing engagements while optimizing resources and maintaining quality.
  • Foster an inclusive team environment built on trust and a safe-to-speak-up culture.
  • Promote continuous professional development and innovation within the A&A team.

Qualifications

Education & Professional Certifications

  • University degree in accounting, business, finance, or a related discipline; a postgraduate degree is an asset.
  • At least one of the following professional designations is required: CPA and/or CFA. Other relevant designations (CIA, CBV, PMP, CISA, etc.) are an asset.

Professional Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in consulting, internal/external audit, and/or risk management within large and complex financial institutions, public companies, or investment organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience leading audits over public or private investing processes, asset management, portfolio management, and/or investment risk.
  • Broad and deep knowledge of asset management, asset management operations, and their risk implications.
  • Experience leading and managing audit/advisory engagements or large-scale projects.
  • Knowledge of audit methodologies, risk management, and compliance practices, preferably in investment management or financial services.
  • Experience applying data and technology concepts to enhance assurance and advisory activities is an asset.
