Overview
Welcome to HotDoc! đź‘‹
Founded in Melbourne, Australia, in 2012, HotDoc is Australia’s largest patient engagement platform with over 8 million app downloads in Australia.
The past 18 months have seen massive growth for our business, our team, and our community. We now work with over 21,000 practitioners around Australia, including GPs, Allied Health, Dental Practices, Specialists, and Optometrists.
We have ambitious goals to improve the healthcare experience for everyone in Australia with exceptional patient journeys, and we’re looking for extraordinary individuals to help us get there.
Role Purpose & Context
Our Cloud Engineers build, secure, and operate the cloud platform that powers HotDoc’s products for clinics and patients. You turn product and engineering needs into reliable, scalable infrastructure on AWS - primarily via Kubernetes (EKS), Terraform, and modern CI/CD - so teams can ship quickly and safely.
You’ll share ownership of core platform capabilities (networking, compute, storage, IAM, observability, CI/CD) across our dev, staging, and production environments. The role focuses on availability, performance, security, and cost efficiency, reducing toil through automation and well-designed platform primitives. You’ll collaborate closely with product engineering, security, and support; participate in an on-call rotation; and contribute to incident reviews and continuous improvement.
Success in this role looks like: clear, repeatable deployment paths; healthy SLOs (uptime/latency); strong security posture; actionable observability; faster feedback cycles for developers; and measured cost optimisation - ultimately enabling HotDoc to deliver a dependable experience at scale.
Why Join Hotdoc?
Join a purpose-driven team where your work directly impacts practices and patients across Australia. As a Customer Success Manager, you’ll play a key role in ensuring our customers can deliver better care with the help of our platform.
Here’s what you can look forward to:
- Exciting challenges, impactful work: Be part of innovative projects that improve the patient experience and streamline practice operations. Every day, you’ll see how your efforts contribute to better healthcare outcomes.
- Collaborative environment: Work with a supportive team that thrives on shared successes and continuous improvement.
- Autonomy with Support: Enjoy the freedom to own your accounts and make impactful decisions, with your leader and team always there to back you up
What will you be doing?
As a Cloud Engineer within our Platform, Technology Operations team, you will:
- Build and automate our AWS infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (primarily Terraform) to provision, manage, and evolve secure, scalable environments.
- Operate and improve our Kubernetes (EKS) platform: own cluster health, upgrades (including blue/green), node group lifecycle, and Helm-based deployments; troubleshoot workloads and networking.
- Level-up performance, resilience, and observability across production and non-production systems: instrument metrics/logs, build dashboards/alerts, and enable teams to understand system health.
- Streamline CI/CD (Buildkite or equivalent): improve pipelines/agents, fix flaky steps, speed up builds, and help engineers ship safely and quickly.
- Reduce toil through automation: identify and deliver pragmatic improvements that increase safety and simplify complexity.
- Participate in the on-call rotation and contribute to calm, clear incident response and post-incident reviews.
- Collaborate across the stack with engineers and product teams to support developer workflows and platform reliability at HotDoc’s scale (billions of API events, 99.95%+ availability).
What you must have to apply for this role*
- At least 3 years’ experience in cloud/platform engineering, operating high‑traffic production systems.
- Strong AWS fundamentals across networking (VPCs, subnets, routing, security groups), compute & storage (EC2, S3, RDS PostgreSQL, CloudFront), and security (fine‑grained IAM roles & policies).
- Proven hands‑on experience with Kubernetes (EKS): operating clusters with Terraform & Helm, troubleshooting workloads/networking/node groups, and solid Docker proficiency.
- Infrastructure as Code expertise (Terraform): modules, workspaces, remote state, reusable patterns; ability to evolve/maintain large Terraform stacks.
- CI/CD experience (Buildkite or equivalent): configuring agents/pipelines, matrix builds, and pipeline optimisation.
- Observability practice at scale: metrics, logs, dashboards and alerting (e.g., Datadog, CloudWatch, OpenSearch, Vector/Filebeat/Logstash, Athena) to help teams understand system health.
- Incident and on‑call readiness: calm communication under pressure, contribution to post‑incident reviews and continuous improvement.
- Excellent written & verbal communication in a remote‑first team.
Nice To Have:
- Familiarity with PagerDuty and Incident.io
- Experience performing blue/green EKS upgrades.
*Formal education is not required - we value lived and practical experience, deep curiosity, and a track record running complex systems in production.
You’re just the person we’re looking for if you can demonstrate that
- You care about improving the Australian healthcare experience and want your work to have a real‑world impact.
- You can take ownership, reduce toil, and simplify complex systems through automation and code.
- You think critically, communicate clearly, and bring a pragmatic, engineering‑first mindset.
- You’re proactive about reliability, performance and observability, and you continuously look for safer, simpler ways of operating.
- You’re comfortable participating in a shared on‑call rotation and partnering across teams.
- You’re open to challenging the status quo thoughtfully and advocating for constructive change.
