Brief Summary Of Role:
The Youth Diversion Key Worker is responsible for delivering a culturally safe, restorative, and trauma-informed diversion service to young people referred under the NT Youth Justice Act. This includes providing case management, coordinating mandatory diversion activities, and building strong support networks to prevent reoffending and promote positive outcomes across education, employment, family, and community engagement. The role forms part of a small but dedicated team working collaboratively with NT Police, Courts, families, community organisations and local service providers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide time-limited case management and intervention services to young people aged 10-17 referred under Section 39 or 64 of the NT Youth Justice Act.
- Deliver diversion activities tailored to criminogenic needs and cultural context, as part of a three-tiered model (Tier 1 up to 1 month; Tier 2 up to 3 months; Tier 3 up to 6 months).
- Coordinate and facilitate youth justice conferences and assist in developing and monitoring outcome plans.
- Deliver or coordinate group and individual activities aligned with skill development, education engagement, family reconnection, and community service.
- Ensure services incorporate victim awareness, reparation, and accountability.
- Maintain open, respectful communication with clients, families, colleagues, and external partners.
- Work closely with NT Police, Courts, Department of Corrections, schools, and local service providers.
- Actively participate in team meetings, case reviews, and stakeholder meetings.
- Build strong, culturally respectful relationships with Aboriginal families, Elders, and community organisations.
- Support the integration of Indigenous mentoring and cultural activities within program delivery.
- Promote community awareness and trust in restorative justice.
Salary And Conditions:
Employment Type: Parttime (30 hours a week)
EA Classification Range: SCS5
Entitlements/Benefits: 6 Weeks Annual Leave + 2 Weeks Sick Leave + 2 Weeks Ancillary Leave + 1 RDO per Month (Pro-rata basis)
Location: Big Rivers Child & Family Centre - 1/42 Katherine Terrace, Katherine NT 0850
Hours of work: [Monday to Friday | between 08:00am – 4:30pm]
The successful applicant should poses the following attributes, skills and competencies;
- Certificate II/III/IV in Community Service or Youth Work or Relevant Field or relevant work experience is desired
- Experience working with young people at risk, including those involved with police, courts, or youth justice.
- Understanding of the cultural needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work empathetically with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Demonstrated ability to organise, facilitate, and participate in a variety of person-centred activities.
- Strong administrative skills, including use of various IT equipment, devices and software systems.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Valid NT Drivers Licence, Valid Ochre Card, and willingness to undergo a National Police Check
