The Role
The objective of this position is to oversee and direct the Health, Safety and Environmental Management activities of the group to ensure a high performing safety culture and a system of work that is best practice and compliant with all legal and contractual obligations.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Ensure HS&E policies, procedures, manuals, syste ms, and reporting are maintained and updated.
- Ensure HS&E systems and controls comply with the relevant standards and regulations.
- Review legislation changes as they arise and develop processes and policies to ensure compliance.
- Monitor industry developments for health and safety practices that improve outcomes and champion implementation.
- Provide advice to the health and safety committee on issues that arise.
- Regularly visit field works and office locations, conduct audits and mentor and coach supervisory staff and workforce on safety and environmental management practices. Support work site safety and environmental targets.
- Develop a organisation vision for health and safety and lead the development of the annual Safety Improvement Plan, using data and observation to identify where we wish to be heading, where we are now and what we need to do to close the gap.
- Identify, lead and facilitate change and improvement in health and safety and environmental management systems and processes including challenging and investigating when things go wrong (incidents and complaints) and how they can be prevented into the future .
Required Skills and Experience
- Certificate IV in Health and Safety (or equivalent qualification or higher)
- Experience in working with systems which comply with AS/NZS 4801:2001, ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO45001:2018
- Experience in developing best practice HS&E policies and systems
- Knowledge and experience of HS&E in the rail, civil engineering and/or construction industries
- The ability to engage and influence the senior leadership team and those employees at the front line
- Proven capability to direct site and work level staff as to their OHSE responsibilities
- Commitment to keep abreast of industry trends, regulatory change and best practice
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with an ability to influence without authority
- Sound understanding of VIC & QLD HS&E legislation for the Construction and Rail industries (beneficial but not mandatory)
- Sound understanding of Rail Safety and Rail Safeworking practices and legislation (beneficial but not mandatory)
- The ability to liaise with clients regarding HS&E legislation and customer requirements on behalf of the business
