System Design is seeking a highly motivated and versatile Section Manager (3L) to join our exciting teams leading the clean energy transition. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to lead the team in building the electric grid of the future by working on the design and reliability of the electric distribution system, electrical facilities, and equipment. The Section Manager manages the High Tension and GRID Edge Teams within Distribution Engineering System Design. The High Tension Team is responsible for the technical review and interconnection of customers and developers requiring medium-voltage connections for traditional loads, renewable energy, and distributed generation operating in parallel with the system. This team evaluates technical designs, including single-line and three-line diagrams, generation operating characteristics, relay protection settings and coordination, customer switchgear, and other electrical design elements. Once construction is complete, the team oversees commissioning for parallel operation and develops specifications for energization, operation, and maintenance. Additionally, the High Tension Team supports interconnection studies and facilitates projects seeking to participate in the wholesale market under the Utility Process. The Generating Resources Interconnecting to the Distribution (GRID) Edge Team handles the technical review of applications for Distributed Energy Resources seeking to interconnect to our Distribution System in accordance with the New York State Interconnection Requirements (NYSSIR). This team conducts interconnection analyses to ensure safe and reliable system operations as customers and developers integrate distributed generation alongside the grid. The Section Manager is responsible for setting priorities, planning, and coordinating work while fostering an inclusive and safe work environment. They must possess exceptional communication and organizational skills, effectively managing a large team of engineers while driving process improvements and ensuring compliance with electric distribution system design standards. The Section Manager contributes to evaluating innovative design solutions, providing technical expertise, and coordinating company resources to support developers of new generation and distribution assets. The Section Manager effectively and positively interacts with all levels of management, customers, vendors, regulatory agencies, etc. as well as manage multiple projects simultaneously. Core Responsibilities
  • Manage, direct and supervise engineering and/or contractor personnel in providing expertise and coordination among various operating departments and customers on technical matters.
  • Provide and support learning and growth opportunities for your employees.
  • Manage and prioritize tasks for the team to ensure high visibility items are addressed and to drive process improvements.
  • Evaluate innovating solutions to address challenges for interconnecting DER projects to the distribution system.
  • Ensure that contractor's and customer's installations are in compliance with company specifications and operating requirements, and that appropriate coordination of company construction activities are adequately in place to ensure timely response to customer needs.
  • Periodically meet with customers and contractors to determine the level of satisfaction of service received and resolve customer or client complaints.
  • Work with other departments to continually improve the work process to add value for the customer and the Company.
  • Serve on in-house and industry technical committees and task forces.

  • Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.
Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree Engineering and a minimum of 8 years of related work experience
Relevant Work Experience
  • Ability to effectively interact with both internal and external customers, support staff and various levels of management Required
  • Must be flexible, and be capable of exercising independent judgment Required
  • Ability to effectively engineer, schedule, manage, and prioritize a number of complex projects and assignments Required
  • Ability to drive multiple projects to successful completion Required
  • Knowledge of the Con Edison electric distribution system and various associated designs Required
  • Pertinent experience includes the design and operating aspects involved in system and substation design related to providing high tension and distributed generation interconnection to customers. Preferred
  • Knowledge of primary distribution transformers, medium voltage switchgear, grounding systems, station battery systems, medium voltage revenue metering, protective relaying and voltage regulation systems with a working knowledge of distribution substation equipment and the associated design calculations, operating and protective relaying philosophies and grounding. Preferred
  • Knowledge of distributed generation interconnection designs Preferred
  • Relay Protection knowledge Preferred
  • Electrical Engineering experience Preferred
  • Experience in evaluating reliability benefits of alternative solutions, provide technical expertise and guidance and coordinate company resources to provide support to developers of new generation and distribution resources.X Preferred

Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed.
  • Must be available 24/7, and available to be on call and/or participate in off-hour emergency response activities as required.
