General Responsibilities:
This role is essential in safeguarding the health and safety of patients and employees. Key responsibilities include improving health outcomes and services, collaborating across departments on initiatives that ensure staff and patient safety, and minimizing errors in healthcare processes. The Clinical Risk and Occupational Health Manager develops, implements, and oversees the clinical risk management plan and occupational health activities, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and federal and state laws and regulations.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing and current state or multistate license.
• Additional post-secondary education or baccalaureate degree in Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or related field.
• At least two years of experience in a clinical healthcare setting, preferably in roles that involve patient safety, risk management, clinical operations, process improvement, or occupational health services.
• Demonstrated experience in identifying, assessing, and addressing health and safety risks, particularly in a healthcare or clinical environment.
• Demonstrated experience in implementing systems and solutions to mitigate risk and improve health outcomes for patients and employees
• Experience in leadership roles involved in overseeing health programs, staff, and organizational initiatives related to risk and occupational health.
• Current BLS certification
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in Occupational Health, Risk Management, Public Health or Healthcare Administration.
• Experience with quality improvement models and tools a plus
• Candidates who do not meet all preferred qualifications are encouraged to apply.
• Certifications: Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM), Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN), or other related certifications.
Significant Job Functions:
Risk Management:
• Annually evaluates the risk management plan and collaborates with stakeholders to identify clinical and occupational risks, develop strategies, and implement plans that enhance staff and patient safety.
• Monitors the effectiveness of risk management activities and ensures compliance with federal and state laws, regulatory standards (e.g., FTCA, HRSA, CDC, OSHA), and organizational policies.
• Leads the review of high level/sentinel events requiring root-cause analysis, disseminating lessons learned, and develops process improvement plans.
• Oversees Patient Safety Committee activities and reports trends and risk mitigation plans to organizational leadership.
• Assists in the review, creation, and amendment of policies and standard operating procedures, ensuring alignment with organizational needs and compliance with federal and state regulations.
• Works with Compliance, Human Resources, and the Clinical Education Department to ensure the accurate and timely submission of the annual FTCA application.
• Collaborates with the Clinical Education Department to identify and assign risk management trainings/screenings, ensuring timely completion by staff as required.
• Supports Compliance with operational site visit (OSV) preparation and ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements of the Health Center Program.
• Prepares reports and presentations on risk management activities for organizational and board meetings, providing the status of risk activities and plans.
• Responds to claims and complaints by conducting clinical investigations and chart audits related to patient grievances and quality of care concerns.
• Acts as an organizational subject matter expert to answer questions and resolve risk and occupational health-related matters.
• Identifies clinical errors, near misses, and other incidents to reduce risk and improve healthcare delivery.
• Provides a clinical lens related to medical examiner records requests.
• Acts as a liaison with the onsite lab vendor, ensuring clinical compliance with contractual obligations and patient experience.
• Actively participates in committees as assigned.
• Stays current with industry regulations and legal requirements and meets annual FTCA learning requirements.
Occupational Health
• Provides guidance and direction for occupational health activities, including infection control, immunization compliance, and FTCA/high risk training requirements.
• Responds promptly to serious employee injuries, ensuring proper documentation, compliance and learning and collaborates with Human Resources to provide return-to-work guidance.
• Oversees employee immunization and screening data compliance and heath record safety.
• Works in collaboration with Human Resources to ensure staff compliance with onboarding, credentialing, recredentialing, and occupational health requirements.
• Oversees occupational health screenings, onboarding and annual vaccination requirements.
• Leads initiatives to address safety concerns to reduce workplace risks.
• Promotes safe healthcare delivery and work environments by ensuring proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols.
• Implements strategies to enhance the accuracy of clinical processes to reduce workplace injuries and improve patient outcomes.
• Other duties as assigned.
Physical Effort/ Environment:
• This role is hybrid, requiring 2-3 days onsite per week.
• While certain accommodations can be made, position requires some physical exertion and dexterity in using computer applications and equipment.
• Potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens, biohazardous materials, and infectious diseases (i.e., tuberculosis, COVID-19).
• Manual dexterity required for injections, immunizations, and computer use. Transportation is needed to all Thundermist locations.
Work Schedule Demands:
• Full time Monday through Friday. Some evening and weekend responsibilities as assigned.
Communication Skills:
• Exceptional oral and written skills needed and ability to develop and deliver public presentations.
• Ability to review, evaluate and modify policies in support of the health and safety of patients and employees.
