Wood is currently looking for a Senior Safety System Engineer to join our System Integration (SI) team within out Digital Consulting business supporting across our UK projects. 

There is a requirement for hybrid working with Tuesday and Wednesday being based out of any of the following locations – Aberdeen, Glasgow or Staines. Occasional travel to the client site is also expected as required.

 Applicants must be able to pass HMG Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check.  

The Role

The Senior Safety Systems Engineer will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and reliability of complex systems throughout their lifecycle. This person will lead hazard analysis, develop mitigation strategies, and ensure compliance with safety standards. Responsibilities will extend to relay-based systems, where they apply expertise in relay logic and compressor control systems to design, assess, and validate safety-critical functions.

The Key Objectives of this role are: 

  • Lead system-level safety assessments using techniques like FMEA, FTA, and HAZOP
  • In depth analysis and validation of relay-based systems, with a particular focus on relay logic and compressor control systems
  • Integrate safety requirements into design, development, and validation phases of engineering projects
  • Develop and maintain safety documentation including safety plans, safety cases, and hazard logs
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to embed safety into hardware, software, and system architecture
  • Conduct root cause analysis for incidents and implement corrective actions
  • Support audits and certification processes with regulatory bodies and third-party assessors
  • Review engineering changes for safety impact and approve modifications
  • Drive continuous improvement in safety processes, tools, and methodologies
  • Participate in risk reviews and gate meetings to ensure safety milestones are met
  • Contribute to the development of safety culture across the organization
  • Analyse simulation and test data to validate safety performance
  • Recommend safety technologies and tools to enhance system reliability
  • Coordinate with suppliers and partners to ensure safety compliance across the supply chain
  • Stay updated with evolving safety regulations and industry best practices

Expected:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, or Safety Engineering)
  • Proven years of experience in safety-critical systems or engineering environments
  • Experience with relay-based systems, particularly in designing and implementing relay logic for control and safety applications
  • Proficiency in safety analysis techniques like FMEA, FTA, HAZOP, and risk assessment methods
  • Experience in developing and maintaining safety cases, safety plans, and hazard logs
  • Familiarity with systems engineering lifecycle and integration of safety requirements
  • Ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and communicate safety priorities effectively

Desirable:

  • Compressor control system experience
