We are looking for a talented Product Functional Test Mechanical Technician – Level II - OFFC to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Cummins Inc. facility in Fridley, MN.
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
- Test Preparation: By preparing test articles for tests, including initial build and final teardown, you will ensure that all tests are conducted on well-prepared and suitable articles.
- Instrumentation Installation: Your responsibility for installing instrumentation into test articles as per relevant engineering standards will ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results.
- Testing Assistance: Assisting in testing in accordance with established test procedures and methodology will contribute to the smooth execution of tests and the generation of valid data.
- Equipment Preparation: Preparing test articles, fixtures, rigs, and equipment for testing will ensure that all necessary resources are ready and available for testing.
- Understanding Test Equipment: Demonstrating an understanding of the function of test equipment and its contribution to the validity of test results will enhance the quality of the testing process.
- Product Knowledge: Demonstrating knowledge of the functioning of the product under test to assess its contribution to the validity of the test results will ensure that test results are interpreted correctly and effectively.
- Test Stand Management: Performing test stand installation, troubleshooting, setups, and the upkeep and maintenance of laboratory equipment will ensure that the testing environment is always ready and optimal for testing.
- Versatility: Performing other duties as required will demonstrate your versatility and adaptability, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of your team.

- Data Acquisition: Preparing samples, verifying equipment calibration, and performing tests according to approved standard procedures or work instructions will ensure the delivery of trustworthy data to engineers or customers.
- Product Function Test System Design: Interpreting test equipment specifications from test standards or customer requirements, selecting and integrating appropriate equipment, instrumentation, and software will ensure the validity of test results and the capability of the lab equipment.
- Test Setup and Configuration: Interpreting the test plan to determine the optimal location and orientation within a test space and fabricating the required system with appropriate materials will ensure safe and effective testing conditions.
- Test Article Build: Assembling test articles according to test requirements, including all necessary installation or accommodations for instrumentation, will enable successful product functional testing.
- Preventative and Predictive Maintenance: Interpreting machine and tool maintenance records and data to develop and execute preventative and predictive management strategies will drive continuous improvement within the manufacturing process.
- Problem Solving: Solving problems using a systematic analysis process, leveraging industry-standard methodologies to create problem traceability, determining the assignable cause, implementing robust, data-based solutions, identifying the systemic root causes, and ensuring actions to prevent problem reoccurrence will protect the customer and improve the overall process.
- Mentorship: Mentoring others on effective problem-solving techniques will foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement within your team.
Education/Experience
- High school diploma, certificate of completion of secondary education or equivalent experience in an appropriate STEM field is required.
- Regionally applicable certification or two-year associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of study may be required.
- This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
- Requires some work experience and intermediate level knowledge obtained through education, training, or on-the-job experience.
Overview
As an Acoustics and NVH Technician, your role is crucial in supporting the acoustics and NVH team in a Generator Set Manufacturing business. You will be responsible for setting up and operating generator sets for testing, including preparing the test environment, connecting electrical systems, and ensuring that all safety protocols are followed. This position requires a hands-on approach and technical expertise in setting up the generator set for vibration and acoustics with setup of related equipment.
Additional Information
Core Responsibilities:
- Execute experimental noise and vibration measurements on generator sets, enclosures, and muffler systems in ATC’s acoustic chambers and test facility, to ensure accuracy and repeatability.
- Safely set up and install heavy generator sets (60L–95L) in the acoustic chamber using forklifts, Versa-Lift, and other material handling equipment.
- Follow all safety procedures and ensure a safe working environment in the lab.
- Conduct routine safety checks for test cells, lifting equipment and measurement systems.
- Support setup, calibration, and maintenance of acoustic instrumentation (microphones, sound intensity probes, data acquisition systems) and document/analyze test results for engineering teams.
Required Skills, Education, Or Experience:
- Associate degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or related field, or equivalent hands-on experience in a test lab environment.
- Demonstrated experience with material handling equipment (e.g., forklifts, Versa-Lift, overhead cranes) and ability to move/install heavy machinery.
- Practical experience with instrumentation setup and data acquisition systems will be an added advantage (e.g., LMS, Brüel & Kjær, GRAS microphones).
- Strong understanding of lab safety practices and ability to enforce safety procedures.
Preferred Skills, Education, Or Experience:
- Prior experience in Test cell testing of Engines or Gensets and set up for data acquisition of acoustic testing of engines, generator sets, or similar rotating machinery preferred.
- OSHA forklift certification or equivalent safety training in heavy equipment/material handling preferred.
