Position Summary
At Stony Brook Medicine, a Program & Quality Manager Apheresis and Blood Donor Center, is a valuable member of the Department of Laboratories team. This position reports directly to the Blood Bank Medical Director for patient care issues, the Interim Assoc. Technical Director and/or Administrative Director of Clinical Pathology for administrative, regulatory and technical issues and the AVP of Nursing, Cancer Services, for nursing practice.
Duties of a Program & Quality Manager Apheresis and Blood Donor Center, may include the following but are not limited to:
- The incumbent must maintain competence in blood donor evaluation and processing donor and apheresis procedures including autologous and allogeneic stem cell collections. Assesses disease & related risks posed by apheresis & helps determine effective treatment plan.
- The incumbent participates in the evaluation of clinical status of apheresis & stem cell patients & helps determine & coordinate medication, lab & apheresis orders and evaluation of peripheral stem cell donors.
- The incumbent must provide effective counseling to patients and donors on the different aspects of blood donation and therapeutic apheresis including but not limited to the risks, the process and testing and the outcome of testing that will be performed on the donor.
- The incumbent participates in and conducts blood utilization review with the direction of the Blood Bank Medical Director. The incumbent oversees Quality and Patient Safety by managing, monitoring and evaluating unit specific quality and patient safety programs:
- Oversees unit specific quality and patient safety program
- Improves quality of daily operations based on clinical indicator outcomes.
- Assesses unit for factors related to patient safety.
- Evaluates the quality and appropriateness of care.
- The incumbent assists the Medical Director in the investigation of wastage, market retrievals/recalls/etc. (such as "lookbacks") and errors as applicable.
- The incumbent is in charge of analyzing workload and the assignment of staff scheduling in the donor center and therapeutic apheresis areas. The incumbent manages the daily operations of assigned unit:
- Directs and manages assigned staff.
- Demonstrates interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Manages unit-specific recruitment, selection and retention of unit staff
- Assumes responsibility for staffing and scheduling personnel
- Assures appropriate orientation, education, credentialing and continued professional development for staff.
- The incumbent investigates new donor/therapeutic procedures and works with the Blood Bank Interim Associate Technical Director and Blood Bank Quality Coordinator in the implementation of such procedures. Contributes to the education and professional advancement of staff and students:
- Fosters a climate conducive to educational experiences for nursing students and students of other disciplines.
- Participates and involves nursing staff in evidence based practice research activities.
- The incumbent implements and coordinates the staff who teaches the blood transfusion information portion of the nurse orientation program and recertification programs and acts as the nurse liaison between the Blood Bank and nursing division for transfusion education.
- The incumbent develops and writes / approves the SOPs required for donor center operations and therapeutic apheresis. This process is coordinated with the Blood Bank Quality Coordinator.
- The incumbent along with the nurse clinician, acts as a resource for all staff nurses, trains staff nurses to attain and maintain competency in Donor Center/Apheresis and conducts general orientation of new staff and orientation of all staff to new procedures. Maintains and develops professional competency in nursing, areas of clinical specialization and health care policy. Engages in activities that support own professional development and competency.
- The incumbent participates in research.
- Must comply with HIPAA and other hospital and regulatory policies regarding patient confidentiality.
- Will follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.
- Identify potential problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the supervisor or director.
- Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
- To serve as a professional role model in representing the Department of Laboratories.
- Maintains excellence in community service.
- The incumbent sets the departmental benchmark for customer service by personally displaying the following behaviors:

- The incumbent in conjunction with the Blood Bank Interim Associate Technical Director, assures fiduciary responsibility for the unit:
- Participates in planning, monitoring and analyzing the budget.
- Participates and involves staff in budget planning.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- BSN required.
- New York State license to practice as a Registered Nurse
- Minimum three years relevant nursing experience in specialty (Blood Donor and Apheresis)
- Minimum two years management/supervisory experience.
- Competency with computer applications, e.g., Microsoft Office (word, excel and Power Point)
- Excellent interpersonal and written skills. Candidate must be able to think tactically and strategically. Strong analytical and organizational skills. Excellent and proven problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Nursing, Health Care Administration or related field.
- Certification in Specialty
- Experience with Quality and Patient Safety Monitoring and Metrics

Anticipated Pay Range:
The salary range (or hiring range) for this position is $117300 - $167244 / year.
The above salary range represents SBUH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate’s validated years of comparable experience. Any efforts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification from the application process or termination of employment if hired.
