The Senior Engineer independently provides and directs the characterization of process optimization strategies and troubleshooting of complex operational issues within manufacturing, operations, pilot plant, or capital projects. This role applies advanced and diverse engineering principles to the design and implementation of system modifications, experiments, process improvements, and capital projects. The Senior Engineer develops, organizes, analyzes, and presents interpretations of results for operational issues and projects of significant scope and complexity, while serving as a technical leader and mentor across functions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete complex or novel assignments requiring development of new and/or improved engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Develop engineering policies and procedures impacting multiple organizational units.
  • Supervise, coordinate, and review work of a small staff of engineers, associates, and/or technicians on an ongoing and project basis.
  • Employ advanced engineering techniques or modifications of advanced techniques within area of expertise.
  • Apply mature engineering knowledge across related fields outside of primary discipline.
  • Serve as a peer-recognized technical specialist in at least one engineering area with responsibility for determining methodologies.
  • Plan, conduct, and oversee large-scale engineering projects.
  • Develop technical solutions to complex problems requiring ingenuity, creativity, and scientific application.
  • Partner with Manufacturing, Research, Process Development, Utilities, Facilities, Quality Assurance, and Validation to define requirements and recommendations for highly complex system/facility modifications.
  • Work with Project Managers to deliver design and engineering projects within scope, schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
  • Coordinate with consultants, architects, and engineering firms on standard design documents and execution.
  • Develop departmental and/or project budgets encompassing multiple engineering disciplines.

Requirements

Education Requirements

  • Doctorate in Engineering OR
  • Master’s in Engineering + 2 years of engineering experience OR
  • Bachelor’s in Engineering + 4 years of engineering experience.

Background in Science or Engineering required.

Required Competencies & Skills

  • Working knowledge of pharmaceutical/biotech processes.
  • Familiarity with validation processes and protocol execution requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of documentation practices in regulated environments.
  • Ability to apply GLPs, GMPs, and engineering science to production.
  • Skilled in problem solving, applied engineering, and technical report writing.
  • Effective verbal communication and technical presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience with specialized equipment/processes and validation of new installations.
  • Ability to collaborate across teams, manage change, and adapt to evolving requirements.
  • Competence in financial analysis, project cost development, and schedule management.
  • Strong leadership, negotiation, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage contractors, vendors, and cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with parenteral products, vision systems, device assembly, and packaging.
  • Established expertise in at least three engineering technology areas.
  • Proven ability to independently identify when external/internal resources are required to solve problems.
  • Demonstrated success in equipment/process optimization projects within a pharmaceutical/biotech environment.
