Dallas District ’s Bridge Section is looking for a Bridge Inspection Specialist based in Mesquite, Tx. This specialist will help TxDOT ensure the safety of the traveling public, preserve our large financial investment in Texas bridges, meet and exceed the Federal Highway Administration’s requirements for states’ Bridge Inspection Programs. Dallas District oversees the maintenance, inspection, and monitoring of more than 7000 bridges. As a District, we have more structures than most states. Responsibilities for this position will include routine inspections, special inspections, condition surveys, QA/QC of inspections and preparation. Position Description
Bridge Inspection Specialist I
Performs work directly related to the statewide bridge inspection program by obtaining/reviewing bridge inspection data, performing bridge inspections, quality control reviews related to bridge inspection; addressing necessary actions regarding Federal Inspection Metrics; performance and preparation of needed plans of action of scour assessments; preparation and oversight of critical finding follow-up plans of action; addressing database discrepancies. Drives and learns to operate specialized bridge inspection equipment. Work requires contact with governmental officials; work is overseen by a licensed professional engineer; work requires travel. Work may be physically demanding and potentially hazardous. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision. However, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Bridge Inspection Specialist II
Assists in implementation of statewide bridge inspection program to include management of all aspects of consultant inspection contracts; bridge inspection quality control reviews; performs and documents routine, emergency, follow-up and other bridge inspections; interprets inspection findings and recommends bridge maintenance and repairs; proactively addresses necessary actions regarding Federal Inspection Metrics; assesses scour and prepares and oversees scour action plans; prepares and oversees critical finding follow up action plans. Provides guidance to employees performing bridge maintenance inspections. Drives and operates specialized bridge inspection equipment. Work requires contact with governmental officials; is overseen by a licensed professional engineer; and may be physically demanding and potentially hazardous. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Bridge Inspection Specialist III
Assists in implementation of statewide bridge inspection program to include management of all aspects of consultant inspection contracts; bridge inspection quality control reviews; performs and documents routine, emergency, follow-up, Special and other bridge inspections; interprets inspection findings and follow up actions and recommends bridge maintenance and repairs; proactively addresses necessary actions regarding Federal Inspection Metrics; prepares and oversees critical finding follow up action plans. Provides guidance to employees performing bridge maintenance inspections. Work is overseen by a licensed professional engineer, requires contact with government officials, may be physically demanding and potentially hazardous. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives.] Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Bridge Inspection Specialist IV
Implements the statewide bridge inspection program including inspection contract management. Performs and document routine, emergency, follow-up, special and other bridge inspections. Proactively performs Federal Inspection Metric activities including quality control review, scour and critical finding assessment and provision and oversight of plans of action. Provides technical expertise in bridge related matters including recommendations of bridge maintenance and repairs. May train, lead] and guide the work of others. Performs emergency, routine and other bridge inspection activities. Is a qualified NBIS team leader, Work is overseen by a licensed professional engineer, requires contact with government officials, may be physically demanding and potentially hazardous. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Essential Duties
Bridge Inspection Specialist I:
- Assists with bridge inspections.
- Assists with quality control reviews related to bridge inspection activities and monitors needed corrective actions.
- Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Bridge Inspection Specialist II - all the above plus:
- Ensures prompt notification of any deterioration or damage that could be hazardous to the traveling public or more costly to repair if neglected.
- Monitors contracts for inspections done by consultants.
- Prepares bridge inspection follow-up worksheet for maintenance and gives instruction for recommended actions; monitors follow-up actions taken by maintenance.
Bridge Inspection Specialist III - all the above plus:
- Monitors bridge inspection consultant activities and assists with coding as needed.
- Assists with quality control reviews related to bridge inspection activities and monitors needed corrective actions.
- Assists with reviewing and performing scour assessments, preparing needed plans of action, and status oversight of corrective actions.
Bridge Inspection Specialist IV - all the above plus:
- Conducts immediate inspection of damaged bridges, determines necessity of temporary or permanent repairs and notifies maintenance personnel; makes recommendations for the closing of bridges.
- Provides technical expertise and coordination for bridge inspection operations including prioritizing bridge inspections, monitoring correspondence and writing memorandums and reports.
- Prepares and analyzes summaries of bridge inspection computer data.
- Performs quality control reviews related to bridge inspection activities and monitors needed corrective actions.
Minimum Qualifications
Bridge Inspection Specialist I, II, III, or IV - Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience
Bridge Inspection Specialist I:
No Experience Required.
Bridge Inspection Specialist Ii:
- 2 YEARS in either construction; construction/bridge/related structure inspection; bridge appraisal; diving/underwaterinspection of structural elements. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent)
Bridge Inspection Specialist Iii:
- 4 YEARS in either construction; construction/bridge/related structure inspection; bridge appraisal; diving/underwaterinspection of structural elements. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent)
- Must include 1.5 years of active participation in bridge inspection in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS)
Bridge Inspection Specialist Iv:
- 5 YEARS in either construction; construction/bridge/related structure inspection; bridge appraisal; diving/underwaterinspection of structural elements. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent)
- Must include 2.5 years of active participation in bridge inspection in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS)
Licenses And Certifications
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications
- Qualified as a National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) Team Leader

- Bridge engineering principles, practices and methods and the application of engineering theory
- Development of all aspects of traffic Control plans for Bridge Inspection

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
