Job Description

  • Job Title: Switch Gear Specialist
  • Experience: Mid–Senior (5–10 years of experience)
  • Location: Derby, Bristol or Manchester (Hybrid – 2 days on site)

Are you an Electrical Engineer with experience in high-voltage systems and powerplant design? ALTEN UK is seeking Switch Gear Specialists to join our growing team of consultants, supporting large-scale energy projects that will shape the UK’s clean energy future. You’ll play a key role in the design, testing, and maintenance of complex electrical systems within a regulated environment, contributing to innovative solutions that will power generations to come.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and specification of high-voltage (up to 400kV) cabling systems and associated infrastructure.
  • Perform system architecture tasks, ensuring electrical systems integrate seamlessly within a complex plant environment.
  • Carry out testing, verification, and assessment of electrical and switch gear systems to meet safety-critical standards.
  • Support the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of electrical equipment across the full lifecycle.
  • Compare design options, deliver recommendations, and ensure compliance with industry and manufacturing standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to deliver safe, reliable, and innovative energy solutions.

Qualifications

Required Skills:

  • Proven experience in High Voltage (HV) systems design and maintenance (ideally powerplant or energy sector).
  • Expertise in cabling systems, electrical test systems, and system architecture.
  • Strong background in safety-critical environments and working within a regulated lifecycle.
  • Familiarity with IMB Doors and other electrical engineering tools.
  • At least 1 year of professional engineering experience in the UK.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or related discipline).
  • Eligible for BPSS Security Clearance.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in energy generation projects (nuclear, renewables, or other regulated industries).
  • Hands-on experience with commissioning and fault-finding of electrical systems.
