The Role
Are you ready to shape the future of data at UniSuper? As a Staff Data Engineer, you’ll be a senior technical leader within our Data Engineering team, responsible for delivering enterprise-scale data solutions that underpin our strategic objectives. You’ll play a pivotal role in enabling analytics, ML/AI, and operational data pipelines, while championing engineering best practices and mentoring other data engineers.

You Will:

• Provide technical leadership across multiple portfolio projects, ensuring data engineering solutions align with business outcomes and architectural standards.
• Be hands-on in designing, developing, and delivering scalable, secure, and high-performance data pipelines and architectures (batch and real-time) using Azure Databricks, PySpark, DBT, and Fivetran.
• Drive platform evolution by introducing innovative solutions, frameworks, and accelerators that improve delivery speed, quality, and cost efficiency.
• Champion best practices in data engineering, including CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), data quality, and governance.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Data Governance, Risk, Data Science, Cloud Infrastructure, and Solution Architecture) to deliver integrated, compliant, and business-focused data solutions.
• Mentor and coach senior and mid-level engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, continuous learning, and knowledge sharing.
• Lead complex problem-solving for performance optimisation, scalability, and reliability of data pipelines and platform components.
• Ensure alignment of data engineering initiatives with UniSuper’s Enterprise Data Platform strategy and contribute to long-term architectural roadmaps.
• Represent Data Engineering in portfolio planning and delivery forums, providing expert advice on data architecture, design patterns, and delivery approaches.

About You
You are a seasoned data engineering professional with a proven track record of delivering enterprise-grade data solutions and leading technical teams in complex environments. You bring:

• 10+ years of experience in data engineering, with at least 2+ years in a senior or staff-level leadership role.
• Deep expertise in Azure cloud services, Databricks, Delta Lake, and Medallion architecture.
• Strong proficiency in PySpark, DBT, and modern ETL/ELT tools (e.g., Fivetran, Azure Data Factory).
• Demonstrated experience in real-time and batch data processing, streaming technologies (e.g., Kafka), and data integration from diverse sources.
• Advanced knowledge of infrastructure automation (Terraform) and CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps or similar tools.
• Strong understanding of data governance, security, and compliance in cloud environments.
• Ability to lead by example, being hands-on in designing, developing, and delivering high-quality data solutions while guiding others.
• Proven ability to influence and guide technical direction across multiple projects and stakeholders, balancing innovation with business priorities.
• Exceptional problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex data and infrastructure issues.
• A passion for mentoring and developing talent, fostering a collaborative and high-performing engineering culture.
• Excellent communication skills to engage with technical and non-technical stakeholders at all levels.
