The Chilbolton Observatory outside Andover in Hampshire is operated by RAL Space. The Observatory provides a unique combination of scientific and technical capabilities, supporting multiple research communities including atmospheric science, space situational awareness, radio astronomy and communications. 

This post of industrial placement physicist/ electronic engineer will form an integral part of the team based on site at the Observatory with strong links to the Millimetre Wave Technology team based at RAL. The core role is focused on RF engineering  and will be part of the team developing and managing operations of on-site radar equipment to support the requirements of user research programmes.

About the role and a summary of key duties & responsibilities 

As an Industrial Placement Electronics Engineer at Chilbolton Observatory, you will play a key role in supporting the operation and development of advanced radar and tracking systems used in atmospheric and space science. This hands-on placement offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers and scientists, contributing to a range of technical projects and gaining valuable experience in electronic systems used in cutting-edge research.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain atmospheric science radars and space object tracking systems.
  • Assist in the technical development and enhancement of radar technologies.
  • Provide electronic engineering support for various research projects at the Observatory.
  • Contribute to the design, testing, and documentation of electronic systems and components.

To apply for this placement, we are looking for the following: 

Key - Shortlisting (S), at Interview (I) or both (S&I) 

Essential:

  • Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement (S) 
  • Are required or have requested to take an industrial placement year (S) 
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement (S) 
  • Able to commence employment in summer 2026 (S) 
  • Have own transport to reach Chilbolton Observatory, located rurally near Chilbolton village, Stockbridge SO20 6BJ (S&I)
  • Good general knowledge of basic electronics, including both analogue and digital design (S&I)
  • Knowledge of the C programming language (S&I)
  • Good communication skills (S&I)
  • Practical electronic assembly and/ or test skills (I)
  • Experience with electronic test equipment (S&I)

Desirable:

  • RF design e.g. radio links (I)
  • Programmable digital logic design – FPGA (I)
  • Experience with microcontrollers – PIC AVR etc (I)
