Job Summary:

The Department of Medical Education at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Assistant Professor (HS) / Director of Standardized Patient Program. The successful candidate will:

  • Lead and oversee all aspects of the Standardized Patient (SP) program, including recruitment, training, evaluation, and performance management of Standardized Patients.
  • Supervise and manage SP program staff, including simulation technicians, coordinators, and other personnel to ensure smooth operations and quality educational experiences.
  • Collaborate with course directors and faculty to develop, update, and implement SP cases aligned with curricular objectives across foundational and clinical phases.
  • Integrate SP activities and other simulation modalities, including high- and low-fidelity simulators, task trainers, and virtual/augmented reality tools, into the curriculum.
  • Design and maintain a library of SP scenarios, training materials, and assessment tools.
  • Collect, analyze, and report data on student performance and program outcomes; provide evidence-based recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Support faculty development and mentorship in effective SP utilization and simulation-based education.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional policies, accreditation standards, and best practices in medical education and simulation.
  • Create strategic partnerships with community agencies, local healthcare organizations, and professional associations to recruit standardized patients
  • Engage in scholarly activities related to clinical teaching, simulation-based education, or assessment methodologies.

Required Qualifications:

  • MD, DO, PhD., EdD or equivalent terminal degree in a health-related field.
  • New York State Medical Licensure. (if applicable to discipline) 
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in clinical education, simulation, or standardized patient programming.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and supervising medical trainees and LCME/ACGME accreditation standards.
  • Working knowledge of simulation-based assessment and SP program operations.
