General Information:
The Office of Fixed Assets and Surplus Property is seeking a highly motivated College of Business student to support our department with maintaining the fixed asset system, processing forms, decaling equipment, physical inventories, and reconciliations. The Fixed Assets Specialist must be detail-oriented, willing to work in a team atmosphere, and have knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles. This position will play a vital role in assisting with data clean up, as JMU Finance works on the conversion to Oracle ERP.
The Fixed Assets Specialist is a year-round position that involves 10-20 hours per week Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters, and 25-35 hours per week during the summer, if staying in the Harrisonburg area. The position continues through the student's final year at JMU (undergraduate or graduate).
Duties And Responsibilities:
- Keying detailed transactions accurately into the University's fixed asset system and departmental spreadsheets.
- Assisting with the processing of departmental forms, reviewing data in the fixed asset system, and running requested reports.
- Assisting with data clean-up in Fixed Assets and Financial Reporting for the conversion to Oracle ERP, and implementation of Oracle Fixed Assets.
- Reconciling Surplus Property and Financial Reporting financial transactions in PeopleSoft monthly with departmental documents.
- Assisting with bi-monthly Equipment Trust Fund reconciliations and monthly reconciliations of the fixed asset system.
- Assisting Fixed Assets staff with departmental inventory scans as needed and using the handheld bar code readers.
- Assisting Fixed Assets staff with decaling new equipment campus-wide and documenting asset information.
- Assisting with online and in-person surplus property sales, including auditing documentation for surplus auctions.
Qualifications:
- Current JMU College of Business major, preferably Accounting or Finance, and in good academic standing.
- Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Skilled in using PC based software including spreadsheet, database, and word processing applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices.
