Senior Engineer, 5G Core Network (Signaling), IRIS2
Programme Description
IRIS2 is the new European Union secure satellite constellation. This project is the European Union's answer to the pressing challenges of tomorrow to provide secure connectivity services and enhanced communication capacities to the EU and its Member States as well as to governmental users, private companies and European citizens while ensuring high-speed internet broadband to cope with connectivity dead zones.
SES – together with other consortium partners and core members - was selected by European Commission to build and to operate the IRIS2 multi-orbit satellite constellation.
The IRIS2 team enters next project phases and there is a strong need of support for all the activities around service provisioning and products that the system can offer in the future.
Role Description Summary
The Senior Engineer, 5G Core Network (Signaling) is responsible for defining and implementing system concepts for 3GPP-based architectures, with a strong focus on 5G Core signaling protocols, control plane functions, and network orchestration. The role includes designing OSS functions, resource orchestration subsystems, and control/monitoring interfaces across terrestrial and non-terrestrial (NTN) environments.
You will be part of an agile project organization where a flexible way of working and an adaptive mindset is required.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES / KEY RESULT AREAS
- Define and specify 5G Core signaling requirements (e.g., NAS, N1/N2/N3/N4 interfaces, SBI-based service communication, etc.) for both terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks.
- Define the satellite constellation resource control signaling functions for multi-orbit satellite systems.
- Design and specify OSS orchestration and management signaling flows for a multi-orbit satellite system.
- Define and manage the implementation and testing of 5G-NTN signaling procedures (e.g., registration, mobility management, session management).
- Provide system architecture input on resource orchestration, service provisioning, and interworking signaling between NTN and terrestrial 5G Core networks.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define network requirements and ensure alignment with organizational objectives
- Generate and report identified risks in the form of risk registers
Competencies
- Ability to work independently and with limited supervision in complex environments, e.g. project or matrix organizations
- Flexibility and adaptability in response to changing project requirements and environments
- Ability to think strategically and align project goals with organizational objectives
- Problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to acquire detailed technical information within pre-defined deadlines and apply it in everyday situations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to integrate into and lead cross-functional, multicultural and/or virtual project teams
- Proven communication skills to communicate complex information, concepts, or ideas in a confident and well-organised manner through verbal, written, and/or visual means. This also includes presentations in front of a larger audience, e.g. at conferences.
- Business-oriented and business proactive towards potential and/or current customers
- Innovative spirit, proactive approach towards new technical solutions
- Sense of initiative and a can-do attitude
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and in a team
Qualifications Background and Experience
Qualification Basis
- Master’s degree in engineering or science, preferably in Telecommunications Engineering.
- Expert knowledge of 3GPP 5G Core standards, especially control plane and signaling protocols (SBI/HTTP2, Diameter, NGAP, NAS, PFCP, SCTP).
- Proven experience implementing 3GPP Core Network subsystems, with emphasis on signaling, resource allocation, and service orchestration.
- Experience in the telecom industry required; for Senior Engineer, 10+ years of relevant industry experience is required.
Essential Experience
- Basic familiarity with 5G-NTN signaling aspects, including access stratum (AS) and non-access stratum (NAS) adaptations for satellite links.
- Hands-on experience with the development, integration, and testing of 3GPP 5G Core signaling systems.
- Strong knowledge of 5G Core control plane functions: AMF, SMF, PCF, NRF, NSSF, UDM, AUSF.
- Experience with network resource orchestration and signaling for 5G network slicing.
- Software implementation experience in telecom signaling contexts (protocol stacks, control plane frameworks).
Highly desirable experience (several of the following):
- Experience with satellite communications signaling and NTN integration.
- Knowledge of 5G-NTN signaling enhancements (Rel-17 and beyond, NR-NTN).
- Experience with telecom signaling protocol testing, troubleshooting, and simulation tools (e.g., Spirent, Keysight, Wireshark, dsTest).
- Experience with end-to-end signaling call flows for 5G attach, registration, session management, and mobility across NTN.
Other key requirements / comments
- The candidate must be eligible for a “SECRET” security clearance, in accordance with the “loi modifiée du 15 juin 2004 relative à la classification des pièces et aux habilitations de sécurité”, as well as EU/ESA/NATO equivalents
- Willing to work at least 60% onsite from office
- Travel as required for project realization purposes
