LOCATION - This is a remote position and can be based from any location within the United States.

About The Job

The Tepa Companies are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to participate in project design from the conceptual phase to the construction phase. As the Senior Mechanical Engineer you will collaborate with the various project teams to develop, refine, and update design criteria, design direction, and be responsible for generation of engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates.  It is preferred that the successful candidate have experience working with at least one of the following entities:  Federal, state, and local governments.

  • Makes decisions independently on overall objectives and results. 
  • Facilitates the definition of project scope, goals, and deliverables.  
  • Perform tasks of Senior Mechanical Engineer on MEP projects, including preliminary field investigations, scoping, and budgeting of projects, and identifying methods of project execution. 
  • Development of schematic, 30%, 60%, and 100% design phase documents, technical specifications, construction plans, and construction bid package documents.
  • Design of HVAC/Plumbing systems to include building code review and analysis, HVAC load calculations, Plumbing calculations, and equipment sizing.
  • Perform life-cycle analyses and energy/cost analyses of mechanical and plumbing systems.
  • Prepares all types of designs, layouts, and basic plans in conformance with applicable codes and design standards.
  • Execute projects to include HVAC new and retrofit projects, interfacing with clients and contractors, project cost estimation, energy auditing of large HVAC systems and controls, identification of energy conservation measures, boiler and chiller plant upgrades, DDC systems and building simulation energy modeling. 
  • Serve as the primary engineer of record (EOR) on projects.
  • Understanding of and selections for chilled water, condenser water, heating hot water, variable and constant flow, pumping, air handling, and direct-expansion systems.
  • Understanding of and selections for plumbing systems.
  • Understanding of building controls systems and application of sequence of operations, controls diagrams, and controls points list. 
  • Perform QA/QC review of design and construction documents such as drawings, specifications, calculations, equipment selections, code application, Request for Information (RFI’s), and submittal reviews.  
  • Maintains effective in-house team relations, and outside client relations as needed. 
  • Manage and develop work plans and deliverables on multiple projects within budgeted hours, and provide guidance to engineers on management of their task hours.
  • Lead and mentor mid-level and entry level mechanical engineers.
  • Responsible for maintaining and improving internal design processes. 

What We’Re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, or similar from Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accredited college or university
  • 10+ years’ of relevant experience
  • Licensed Professional Engineer or having passed the FE exam with ability to become licensed engineer within a year of hire preferred. 
  • Capability of supporting multiple projects simultaneously 
  • Understanding of design best practices 
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills 
  • Ability to prepare reports and edit proposals 
  • Trane Trace or Carrier HAP
  • Unified Facilities Criteria (UFCs)

Preferred (Not Required):

  • Previous Federal Government project design experience
  • Understanding of AutoCAD and Revit 
  • Experience leading a team of mid-level and entry level mechanical engineer
  • Existing local area industry and vendor relationships
