This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Position

We’re seeking an intern to design and deploy next-generation, agentic AI that accelerates scientific discovery. You’ll build intelligent, automated agents using modern GenAI techniques and connect key data sources across our research ecosystem, including databases and research informatics systems, to create a more integrated and efficient environment.

You’ll collaborate with domain experts and an external enterprise technology partner to pilot solutions in real workflows and iterate based on measurable outcomes.

The Opportunity

  • Design, implement, and evaluate agentic workflows that automate retrieval, reasoning, and actions for R&D use cases.
  • Integrate databases and research informatics systems via secure APIs; design and consume tool APIs (e.g., OpenAPI/MCP) with privacy, compliance, and auditability in mind.
  • Build retrieval and orchestration pipelines (RAG, tool use, multi-agent patterns) with full telemetry; create benchmarking harnesses, including LLM-as-a-judge with human calibration.
  • Deploy and iterate prototypes in an enterprise cloud environment; embed solutions into scientists’ day-to-day workflows with clear runbooks and observability.
  • Document decisions, metrics, and results; partner with scientists, engineers, and the external tech partner to drive adoption.

Who You Are:

  • Currently enrolled in or have completed your Master’s studies within 12 months prior to the start date, or you are pursuing a PhD in computer science, bioinformatics, computational sciences, or related fields.
  • Fluent in English (both written and oral).
  • Able to build good working relationships, and are an outstanding teammate. Your experience and investigative attitude allow you to work independently, to design, perform, and interpret experiments, and to embark on new scientific methodologies.

You Have:

  • Strong Python; solid data engineering fundamentals and API skills (SQL, REST/GraphQL, API design and integration).
  • Familiarity with modern LLM/GenAI stacks, vector stores, and retrieval techniques (RAG); comfort with prompt and tool-use design.
  • Experience with orchestration frameworks/patterns (e.g., LangGraph/LangChain/AutoGen), MLOps fundamentals (Docker, CI/CD), and exposure to MCP or similar protocols for tool integration.
  • Ability to build evaluation and benchmarking pipelines (task success, latency, cost), including LLM-as-a-judge approaches aligned with human-in-the-loop reviews; strong communication and collaborative skills
  • Very good interpersonal and communication skills.

Should this have piqued your interest, apply with your current CV and a Motivation Letter, where you indicate your preferred start date of the internship.

Please note that, due to regulations, non-EU/EFTA citizens must provide a certificate from the university stating that an internship is mandatory as part of the application documents and must be continuously enrolled in their university program for the whole duration of this internship. The letter should also specify the required length of the internship.

If you are proud of contributing and feel you have the dedication to teamwork and innovation that we are seeking, then Roche is the organization for you. Every role at Roche plays a part in making a difference to patients’ lives. If you want to work in a passionate team, make your mark & improve lives, apply now!
