The Media Ecosystem Observatory (MEO) at McGill University is seeking applications for a part-time research assistant position with expertise in analyzing qualitative data on hostile speech. The role will involve reviewing short podcast segments, and assessing both the form and degree of hostility present in the transcript. The candidate will be expected to become familiar with and apply a hostility evaluation framework. The candidate will be joining the Observatory at a stimulating time of growth and expansion and will help drive a growing research agenda through data collection and review.

The Successful Applicant Will Have:

  • Excellent Computer Skills

  • Experience labeling and analyzing transcript data to answer social scientific research questions
  • Basic familiarity with hostile and hate speech
  • Attention to detail and ability to complete repetitive tasks with care
  • Communication skills to coordinate with team members and meet deadlines
  • Comfort working with hostile or harmful language content, including hate speech
  • Ability to engage with politically charged speech objectively

Specific Duties:

Under the direction of the Media Ecosystem Observatory leadership, the successful candidate will be expected to fulfill the following duties:

  • Analyze podcast segments via an online platform
  • Assess the podcast data according to the given hostility framework and scale
  • Apply a clear rating scale across multiple metrics to categorize the level of hostility
