Mō te tūranga | About the Role

In this role, you will play a pivotal part in the Line 1 Finance Risk Team, where you’ll identify, assess, monitor, and mitigate operational risks within the Finance and Treasury Business Unit. You’ll ensure financial operations align with internal policies and external regulations, fostering a culture of integrity, transparency, and accountability. Your proactive approach to risk management and your ability to collaborate across Finance and wider organisational teams will be essential to driving continuous improvement and maintaining a robust and fit-for-purpose control environment.

As part of your responsibilities, you’ll help embed Westpac’s operational risk and compliance frameworks, conduct regular risk assessments, and produce reports for senior leadership. You’ll lead investigations into incidents and compliance breaches, support the development of corrective actions, and deliver training to promote a risk-aware culture. Working closely with cross-functional teams, you’ll monitor risk profiles, identify improvement opportunities through automation and analytics, and contribute to strategic projects focused on regulatory change and process transformation.

Key Responsibilities Include:

• Ensure Finance and Treasury comply with legal, regulatory, and internal policy requirements
• Escalate and monitor significant risk exposures and incidents
• Foster a culture of compliance and responsible behaviour
• Engage with teams to support integrated risk management strategies

Nā tāu rourou | What will you bring?

• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Finance, or Accounting (or equivalent experience). 
• At least 5 years’ experience in operational risk management, compliance, audit, or related finance roles. 
• Relevant experience in Big Four Internal/External Auditing and/or Advisory. 
• Recognised qualifications (CA/ACCA/CIA or equivalent). 
• Ability to balance compliance with operational efficiency and adapt to changing regulatory environments. 
• Expert ability to analyse complex financial processes, identify risks, and develop practical solutions. 
• Strong understanding of financial sector regulations (e.g., Sarbanes Oxley Compliance (SOx) requirements. APRA and RBNZ Regulatory requirements) and their operational impact. 
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to convey technical information to non-technical audiences. 
• Proactive approach to identifying problems and implementing effective solutions. 
• High degree of accuracy in risk assessment and compliance documentation. 
• Collaborative approach and ability to foster a risk-aware culture.
