Senior Research Scientist, Classroom Assessment Products
We’re seeking a Senior Research Scientist to support the development and enhancement of assessment products, with a primary focus on Pearson’s classroom formative assessment system, Navvy. This role centers on conducting research and psychometric activities that drive student learning outcomes through product innovation, validation, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and execution of efficacy studies and research initiatives.
- Contribute to innovative methodologies that inform classroom product development.
- Support data management processes for operational item banks and dynamic form creation.
- While psychometric expertise is valued, candidates with strong skills in efficacy analysis and advanced applied data analysis are encouraged to apply—even if their psychometric background is limited.
Education & Experience
- Advanced degree in educational measurement, statistics, or a related field from a nationally recognized institution.
- Minimum of three years of relevant experience in psychometric assessment or educational research.
Technical Expertise
Psychometric Techniques or Equivalent Expertise
- Proficiency in classical test theory, item response theory, diagnostic classification modeling, test equating, scaling/linking, and standard setting
Or
- Experience applying innovative techniques from your area of expertise to novel educational contexts.
Software & Programming
- Familiarity with tools such as SAS, R, SPSS, WINSTEPS, IRTPro, PARSCALE, C++, MPLUS
Or
- Experience with other relevant platforms (e.g., Matlab, IDL, PERL, Java, JavaScript, XML) and their application in testing or research environments.
Research & Development
- Design and implement studies on predictive validity, efficacy, and evaluation.
- Define study parameters, limitations, and funding needs.
- Coordinate resources, maintain documentation, and deliver reports and presentations.
Assessment Design
- Analyze item bank and form characteristics to support thousands of micro-assessments.
- Collaborate with subject-matter experts on content development, test design, item review, and reporting.
Educational Trends & Innovation
- Propose research aligned with challenges faced by students, families, and educators.
- Uphold the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing.
- Explore AI-driven and game-based assessment solutions for personalized instruction and immersive learning.
Communication & Collaboration
- Deliver clear and tailored technical presentations.
- Produce documentation, present at national conferences, and submit manuscripts for publication.
- Contribute to project narratives and funding proposals.
Project & Team Management
- Apply project management skills to ensure timely and budget-conscious execution.
- Ensure marketing claims are evidence-based and research-informed.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (technology, content, product success, commercialization).
Work Environment
- Remote position with travel limited to 10%.
- Responsible for maintaining schedules and completing assigned duties.
Compensation at Pearson is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and specific location. As required by the California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maryland, New York State, New York City, Washington State, and Washington DC laws, the pay range for this position is as follows:
The minimum full-time salary range is between $90,000 - $115,000.
