The Infection Preventionist role supports the facility infection prevention program by assisting in the development, execution, surveillance and regulatory efforts, under the direction of facility infection prevention leadership. This role will report directly to the facility Infection Prevention leader. Working under the direction of the facility Infection Prevention leader, the Infection Preventionist helps promote a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors through evidence-based practices and regulatory adherence.

The Infection Preventionist responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Program Implementation & Surveillance
- Aid in the development, implementation, and evaluation of infection prevention policies and procedures under guidance from facility Infection Prevention leadership.
- Conduct ongoing surveillance of healthcare-associated and community-acquired infections, collect health data, and analyze trends using established criteria.
- Apply defined processes to promote evidence-based care, report outcome measures and coordinate patient-centered care delivery.
- Reports those diseases and/or conditions that are reportable by law to state and local health departments and interacts with the public health department to respond to inquiries as necessary (e.g., reporting of communicable diseases, healthcare worker exposure).
Outbreak & Incident Response
- Participate in outbreak investigations, assist in identifying infection sources, and report incidents to appropriate internal teams and public health authorities.
Education & Training
- Maintains a knowledge base of current infection prevention information through continuing education, published literature, internet access and professional organizations.
- Collaborate to develop and deliver training for staff on essential protocols including hand hygiene, PPE, isolation procedures, environmental cleaning, and more.
Regulatory Compliance & Reporting
- Supports communication of infection prevention regulations and standards to appropriate personnel and .
- Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory and accrediting bodies (e.g., CDC, CMS, Joint Commission), and support reporting requirements, including NHSN submissions.
- Collaborates multi-disciplinary Environment of Care and/or departmental leaders on environmental rounds (hospital acquired infection specific or general environment of care/construction rounds), including documentation of findings and partnering for corrective action solutions.
Data Analysis & Quality Improvement
- Performs data collection to support analysis of surveillance data to identify trends in rates, pathogens, and antimicrobial resistance.
- Implement performance metrics to support achievement of clinical and nonclinical performance standards supporting a safe healthcare environment.
- Assist in analyzing surveillance and process/outcome data to support performance improvement, and prepare reports for committees, such as Infection Prevention, Medical Quality, Environment of Care and others, as identified.
Collaboration & Consultation
- Work closely with clinical and nonclinical departments, employee health, facility leadership, and public health partners to align infection prevention strategies and communicate key findings and updates.
- Collaborates with key leaders and departments to address safety and quality deficits.
Cultivates and maintains professional relationships with primary customers including operational, clinical and physician leaders, physicians, caregivers, patients, vendors, and external entities to foster opportunities for improvement in metrics related to quality, safety, patient experience.
Education And Experience:
- Minimum – Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum – Two (2) years healthcare setting experience, acute care setting preferred
- Preferred - Experience in patient safety, risk management, accreditation, infection prevention, and/or developing and implementing clinical quality and/or process improvement initiatives.
- Minimum – One (1) year professional development, consultation or supervisory/leadership experience
Certifications And Licensure:
- Minimum – Active and current clinical licensure (RN)
- Preferred – Certification, knowledge, or expertise with performance improvement/CQI methodologies (e.g., Continuous Improvement, Lean Six Sigma).
- Preferred – Current knowledge of accreditation and regulatory requirements for acute care services.
Other Requirements:
- This position may have additional or varied physical demand and/or respiratory fit test requirements.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English (Verbal/Written).
- Proficient in EHR and other common computer applications (i.e., Microsoft Word, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint and others, as identified)
