This position will primarily focus on reviewing prior authorization (PA), override, appeal, and exception requests for prescription medications, applying established formulary criteria and clinical judgment to ensure safe, effective, and cost-effective use of therapies. The pharmacist will render determinations, document clinical decisions, and communicate with providers, pharmacies, and internal teams to support accurate and timely patient care. The role requires staying current with drug guidelines and benefit policies, collaborating across teams to maintain consistency in decision-making, and contributing to process improvements that enhance quality, efficiency and accuracy.
This position makes significant contribution to the supply expense management initiatives of Mayo Clinic enterprise by supporting and participating in the activities of the Pharmaceutical Formulary Subcommittee (PFS), its committees and task forces, in addition to other committees and groups as required by SCM, Aluma and Mayo Clinic. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Reviewing, negotiating and completion of pharmaceutical purchase and/or managed care contracts, participating member of the PFS by managing, administering, processing and coordinating pharmaceutical contracting with formulary activities, managing contracting for Mayo Clinic's selected GPOs, functioning as service provider for joint ventures (Captis or Alluma), developing contracting strategies that provide optimal value to Mayo Clinic and its patients, managing Mayo Clinic's prime vendor pharmacy distribution agreement, participating in Mayo Clinic and Supply Chain Management specific committees and/or work groups, and meeting and establishing relationships with external pharmaceutical industry, distributor, managed care and Supply Chain leaders on a regular basis to support contracting and pharmaceutical expense initiatives at Mayo Clinic. While fulfilling these responsibilities, in addition to leading enterprise-wide initiatives, which support practice convergence, the Pharmacy Specialist-SCM will establish effective working relationships with internal stakeholders and leadership across the Mayo Clinic enterprise.

- Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy with equivalent experience required. The position requires a minimum of five years of progressive experience in Pharmaceutical operations, clinical practice, distribution, and/or contracting or equivalent experience. Equivalent experience includes completion of a pharmacy residency, at least three years of pharmacy experience with board certification or advanced degree.
- Experience related to formulary development and management, contract management, managed care, pharmaceutical industry, pharmaceutical distribution, and pharmacy operations preferred. Characteristics of incumbent sought: Must be able to relate to, gain support of and drive consensus with appropriate stakeholders for purposes of formulary decision making and best practice. Must have significant facilitation skills and able to work with personnel at all levels of the organization to gain support for the implementation of expense management strategies and initiatives. Must demonstrate knowledge of category management, supply chain management, accounting processes, cost/benefit analyses, inventory control systems, healthcare/pharmaceutical suppliers, distributors, trading partners, medication use evaluation and contracting strategies. In-depth knowledge of formulary and contract management and review. In-depth knowledge and experience with pharmaceutical distributors. Experience and knowledge of the 340b program. Knowledge and understanding of drug pricing and reimbursement concepts. Skilled at developing a negotiation strategy and driving consensus. Ability to interact and build relationships with stakeholders and leadership, as well with external suppliers. Excellent communication and customer service skills are essential. Demonstrates analytical experience with knowledge of financial and accounting concepts. Proficient with computers and software programs necessary to manage meetings, give presentations and perform analyses (Excel, Word, MS Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, wholesaler's system, etc.). Proven management, diplomacy, tact, initiative, and organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage projects. Master of Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or Master of Public Health preferred. Residency training preferred. Residency training in administration or drug information highly desired. Current state pharmacist license or eligible for licensure.
