Description

The Department of Asian Studies at Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in the languages and cultures of Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA) beginning August 1, 2025. This is a full-time one-year position with a teaching load of four courses per year. The appointment has the possibility for renewal contingent on successful annual review and ongoing curricular needs. The fellow will be expected to teach three courses per year in Modern Standard Arabic at the elementary and intermediate levels, with an additional English-language course in Arabic literature and/or cinema.

The salary for this position is $45,333.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be able to teach Modern Standard Arabic to beginners and to heritage speakers at the elementary and intermediate level and will be able to support students as they prepare for and return from study abroad in programs in Tunisia and Jordan. The candidate should be prepared to offer a broadly accessible English-language offering that can be cross-listed in Asian Studies, Africana Studies, French and Francophone Studies, Global Studies, and International Relations. Candidates for this position should have a Ph.D. in Near Eastern Languages and Literature or a related field by summer 2025 and a record of or potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching.
