Indiana University Health is seeking a dedicated Counselor to facilitate patient involvement in treatment and education, providing individual, group, and family counseling, and coordinating discharge planning. This is an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a dynamic healthcare environment.Position Overview:The Counselor works collaboratively with the healthcare team to ensure patients receive safe, timely, and comprehensive care. You will interpret and communicate complex patient and family needs, model caring practices, and assess psychosocial risk factors based on prior functioning, support systems, and reactions to illness.You will provide mental health assessments upon physician referral, facilitate therapeutic interventions, and support complex discharge planning. The role includes serving as a point person for cases involving abuse, neglect, guardianship, foster care, and mental health placements. You will also act as a liaison with protective services and community agencies.Core Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate patient involvement in treatment, education, and discharge planning.
  • Conduct individual, group, and family counseling sessions.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to ensure coordinated, patient-centered care.
  • Assess psychosocial risk factors and develop appropriate intervention plans.
  • Counsel patients and families on emotional, social, and financial impacts of illness/disability.
  • Access and mobilize community resources to meet patient needs.
  • Provide mental health assessments and therapeutic interventions as needed.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for abuse, neglect, and protective services cases.
  • Support guardianship, foster care, adoption, and mental health placements.
Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Education: Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related field required.
  • Licensure: Current licensure or license eligibility in Indiana as an HSPP, LMFT, LCSW, or LMHC.
  • Certifications: CPI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) certification may be required.
  • Knowledge & Skills:
  • Experience: Relevant healthcare, mental health, or community-based experience preferred.
  • Clinical licensure preferred.
  • Understanding the impact of disease and human behavior for assessments and crisis intervention.
  • Knowledge of state and county adult and child protective legal mandates.
  • Principles of growth and development across the lifespan.
  • Strong crisis de-escalation and intervention techniques.
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with community organizations, law enforcement, APS/CPS, schools, and other agencies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
