Job Duties

A. Performance Management (for employees who supervise others)
Examples of Measures for Performance Management:
• Expectations are clear, well communicated, and relate to the goals and objectives of the department or unit;
• Staff receive frequent, constructive feedback, including interim evaluations as appropriate;
• Staff have the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to accomplish goals;
• The requirements of the performance planning and evaluation system are met and evaluations are completed by established deadlines with proper documentation;
• Performance issues are addressed and documented as they occur.
• Safety issues are reviewed and communicated to assure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work related absences.

B. Housekeeping Management
• Establishes schedule of duty/cleaning assignments of staff daily; effectively providing adequate coverage to perform cleaning duties in all patient care and non-patient care areas.
• Inspects patient care units daily to ensure adequate delivery of housekeeping services and an acceptable level of cleanliness to ensure infection control measure are taken; initiates corrective actions as needed.
• Provides guidance to both Housekeeping Workers and Lead Workers to make certain they have a clear understanding of proper cleaning techniques in accordance with established policies and procedures and other safety regulations to include blood-borne pathogens and other related OSHA and EPA guidelines.
• Ensures that cleaning equipment (dust mops, wet mops, buffers, etc.) is available for use by housekeeping staff on a daily basis.
• Assists with the interviewing and hiring of housekeeping employees, displaying professionalism and effective communication.
• Acts in the supervisory capacity for the department in the absence of the Housekeeping Manager, exercising independent judgment in problem solving.

C. Administrative Support
• Assists with the preparation of the bi-weekly workdays for staff to ensure at least minimum staff coverage 7-days per week in all areas of patient care in accordance with policies and procedures and even distribution of days per staff.
• Effectively assess the quality of work performance and completes assigned portions of performance evaluations by established deadlines with proper documentation in accordance with established policies.
• Provides effective oversight and training of staff regarding isolation cleaning procedures in accordance with established policies and procedures and other safety regulations to include blood-borne pathogens and other related OSHA and EPA guidelines.
• Provides effective oversight and training of staff regarding the use of e-mail and internet usage in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Performs cleaning log checks to ensure housekeeping staff completes cleanings as required and performs spot checks of housekeeping staff to ensure appropriate use and type of cleaning chemicals by policies and procedures and OSHA and EPA guidelines; taking appropriate corrective actions when needed. Notifies the Housekeeping Manager of all discrepancies.
• Follows up on all maintenance repair requests submitted by the Housekeeping Department to ensure timely completeness and safety issues.
• Maintains/orders supply of chemicals, paper products, cleaning supplies, etc., utilizing automated ordering methods to communicate supply orders to the Purchasing Department with minimal errors and within budget.

D. Laundry/Linen & Housekeeping Duties
• Communicates with laundry contractor personnel concerning linen levels, distribution, problem resolution and discrepancies and facilitates problem resolution effectively in a timely manner; attends quarterly laundry meetings.
• Accurately records weights/counts of soiled linen/mops going out and clean coming in; verifies contractor invoice of submission to Accounts Payable for payment.
• Keeps the Housekeeping Manager apprised of all linen issues/needs in a timely manner.
• Assists with cleaning of units and other areas as assigned to provide coverage during absences of other housekeeping personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

Proficient in use of computer applications (word processing, database, etc.) and other office equipment. Knowledge and application of cleaning methods and chemicals; ability to write brief correspondence which reflect knowledge of spelling, grammar and composition, communication skills; manage multiple tasks. Demonstrates competencies as defined on Competency Assessment.

Additional Considerations

Previous experience in hospital setting or equivalent supervisory experience.
