Job Summary

The Department of Health Sciences (HSC) invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track position at the Assistant/Associate Professor level in Health Promotion and Education, beginning August 16, 2026. We seek candidates who are highly qualified and motivated to teach health promotion, health education, and public health courses as well as other courses to support the Department of Health Sciences.

A successful candidate will also be expected to pursue cross-functional, integrative curriculum development and incorporate a pedagogical approach to involve students in learning through high levels of engagement.

Candidates will be expected to develop a focused area of research including publication in refereed journals and provide service to the campus and professional communities. For consideration at the associate level, applicants should have an appropriate record of teaching excellence and scholarship.

The Department: The Department of Health Sciences (HSC) is one of six departments and two schools in the College of Applied Science and Technology (www.cast.illinoisstate.edu). There are 16 tenure and non-tenure track faculty members, a full-time academic advisor, a student success coordinator, and one civil service support staff in the department. The Department houses the Central Illinois Area Health Education Center (AHEC). The HSC faculty and staff are committed to student-centered departmental and programmatic excellence.

The Health Promotion and Education program (with approximately 130 undergraduate majors) began in 1973. The program is committed to providing extraordinary learning opportunities that prepare graduates to be in-demand professionals in health promotion and education settings. The program includes sequences in School Health Education, Public Health, Integrative Health & Wellness, and Minors in Health & Wellness Coaching and Public Health. School Health Education is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation for Educator Professionals (CAEP) and Public Health is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). Integrative Health & Wellness and the Minor in Health & Wellness Coaching are approved by the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC). All majors complete either student teaching or professional practice before graduating. Students in the program, depending on sequence, are eligible to take the CHES or NBHWC certifying exams.

The Department of Health Sciences has an on-line Master of Public Health (MPH) Degree that was started in Fall 2023.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$72,000-$84,000; Commensurate with experience and qualifications

Required Qualifications

1) A doctoral degree in health promotion, health education, public health, or a commensurate field. Exceptional A.B.D. candidates will also be considered with an expected completion of their doctoral degree before May 15, 2026.
2) Candidates must be able to demonstrate oral proficiency in the English language as a requirement for this position, as mandated by state law.
