The Role
The Sanitation Supervisor is responsible for leading the sanitation crew to ensure the processing plant meets and exceeds all food safety, hygiene, and regulatory standards. This role is essential for maintaining a safe and clean environment for food production and upholding the company's commitment to quality. The supervisor will oversee daily/nightly sanitation operations, manage the sanitation team, and ensure compliance with all Standard Sanitation Operating Procedures (SSOPs) and government regulations, including those from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
Key Responsibilities & Expectations
Team Leadership and Management
- Lead and train a team of sanitation workers, providing clear direction and fostering a positive, safety-first work environment.
- Create and manage daily and weekly sanitation schedules to ensure all production areas and equipment are cleaned and prepared for operation on time.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide constructive feedback to team members, addressing any issues and ensuring a high level of accountability.
- Coordinate with other departments, such as Production and Quality Assurance, to schedule sanitation activities and minimize disruption to the production process.
- Participate in training programs as required (e.g., WHMIS, HACCP, food safety).
- Report any equipment malfunctions, pest activity, or potential contamination risks to the Manager immediately.
- Working With and Coaching actively with the Sanitation Team.
Sanitation And Compliance
- Develop, implement, and maintain Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs) and the Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS).
- Perform pre-operational inspections to verify that all surfaces and equipment are clean and sanitized before production begins.
- Working together with Quality on environmental swabbing and other quality assurance checks (e.g., ATP testing) to monitor sanitation effectiveness.
- Ensure strict adherence to all food safety regulations, including HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
Operational Management
- Manage inventory of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE), ensuring supplies are always available and properly stored.
- Troubleshoot and resolve sanitation issues, implementing corrective actions promptly and effectively.
- Maintain meticulous records and documentation of all sanitation activities, inspections, and audit findings for compliance and continuous improvement.
Qualifications & Skills
- Previous supervisory experience in a food processing or manufacturing environment, with a strong emphasis on sanitation.
- In-depth knowledge of food safety principles and regulatory requirements (CFIA, FDA, etc.).
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and manage a team.
- Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work in a cold, wet, and fast-paced environment.
- Good physical condition, with the ability to lift heavy objects (e.g., up to 50 lbs. / 23 kg), stand for extended periods, bend, stoop, and reach.
- Flexibility to work night shifts, weekends, and holidays as required by the plant's production schedule.
