Lead Product Designer
As the Design Lead for FME Form, you’ll play a strategic and hands-on role in shaping the experience of Safe Software’s core product, FME Form, while building design maturity and craft excellence across the organization. You’ll guide the full design lifecycle - from discovery, shaping, ideation through to polished delivery - working closely with product management, software development and executive leadership to create intuitive and powerful design solutions that support complex workflows.
You’ll create and leverage a wide range of design artifacts to explore, define, and validate solutions, and you’ll help elevate the broader design practice by mentoring others and embracing new methods, including AI, to improve efficiency and output.
About The Team
As part of the FME Form team, you’ll join a cross-functional group of product managers, software developers, and designers who work closely together to shape Safe Software’s flagship product. The team is responsible for delivering powerful, intuitive experiences that make complex data integration workflows more approachable and effective. We value collaboration, open feedback, and shared ownership, and you’ll play a key role in ensuring design excellence and user-centered thinking are embedded throughout the product development process.
What You’Ll Be Doing
As a Lead Product Designer, you will:
- Lead the end-to-end design process for major enterprise product initiatives, from collaborating on opportunity framing, design scoping, and hands-on concept development to final design handoff and QA.
- Collaborate with and actively solicit feedback from product managers and technical stakeholders to prioritize opportunities, align on vision, scope features, and inform roadmap decisions.
- Apply sound judgment to determine when a solution warrants quick, tactical action (e.g., UI refinements, interaction polish) versus when to invest in deeper research and iterative design cycles—and clearly communicate that rationale to key stakeholders.
- Lead discovery workshops and design sprints with cross-disciplinary teams to drive alignment and clarity.
Design Craft & Technical Fluency
- Work closely with technical stakeholders and domain experts to absorb complex workflows that inform the user experience, and work through the complexity to distill into simpler solutions.
- Deliver a wide range of design artifacts, including:
- Leverage AI tools to expedite ideation, prototyping, research synthesis, and documentation, and continuously look for ways to optimize the design pipeline through experimentation and emerging technologies.
- User flows, journey maps, storyboards, and diagrams to model workflows and key handoff points.
- Low-fidelity sketches, wireframes, or rapid prototypes to collaboratively explore ideas and discuss tradeoffs.
- Diagrams to identity and address edge cases for highly technical workflows
- Hi-fidelity mockups and design specs
User Research & Validation
- Conduct or collaborate on mixed-methods user research and translate research insights and behavioral data into clear, actionable, and concrete design directions.
Mentorship
- Provide support/guidance for design peers, while striking a balance between providing support when needed and giving IC designers autonomy and empowering them to grow.
Qualifications, Skills, And Competencies
Safers come from a variety of backgrounds with a diversity in skills and knowledge. That said, we find that those who are most successful in this role have experience with the following areas.
Required Skills:
- 5+ years of UX/product design experience with a strong portfolio of enterprise, B2B or technical product work.
- Experience designing complex workflows or tools for developers, analysts, data engineers, or other technical users.
- Comfortable engaging in technical conversations and synthesizing technical information and incorporating it into human-centered designs. Ideally you bring some technical knowledge such as:
- Confident communicator able to clearly articulate design decisions and trade-offs to technical teams and senior leadership.
- Familiarity with working across diverse data formats (e.g., GIS, CAD, databases, raster, JSON, XML, REST APIs/web/cloud services)
- An understanding of ETL concepts and data integration processes, even at a high level, to better design for user goals and constraints
- Ability to interpret workflows that involve databases, APIs, or automation, and translate them into intuitive product experiences.
- Bonus: Familiarity with query languages (like SQL) or scripting (Python) to empathize with technical users.
Desired Skills / Bonus Points:
- Experience with desktop-native apps, especially in performance-sensitive or data-rich environments.
