Job Description
NYC Parks is a design award-winning city agency that builds and cares for public spaces for New Yorkers to connect, play and enjoy. These public spaces, encompassing over 5,000 properties and 14% of the city’s land and coastline, include seawalls and waterfronts, pedestrian bridges, beaches and boardwalks, parks and playgrounds, historic houses, recreation centers and pools and spray showers.
With a dedicated team, the Deputy Director of Structural Engineering is a leadership position at NYC Parks responsible for designing and tackling engineering solutions for beloved public spaces and structures. The work of this unit impacts neighborhood growth, public health, local commerce and sustainability initiatives throughout the five boroughs of New York City. The portfolio of engineering projects is fascinating and unparalleled. The setting for these projects is on the main stage of the world's most renowned Park system and City.
This position would be responsible for managing a portfolio that includes both historic and new structures and buildings, waterfront structures, retaining walls and other structures throughout the City.
Major Responsibilities
- Under direction of the Engineering Team Leader, manage engineering staff by assigning projects, monitoring workloads, team and projects progress, schedule and/or performance; perform review of technical work, monitor and evaluate employees' performance, attendance and approve timesheets and leave requests; and update staff on any relevant Agency or division matters.
- Direct and manage workload specifically associated with structural engineering work within Parks’ purview.
- Ensure projects are consistently designed and executed according to best practices and properly filed with Department of Buildings or any other authorities having jurisdiction.
- Ensure timely completion of design projects and transmittal of bid documents.
- Facilitate rapid problem-solving on issues that arise during construction or conditions that may pose a danger to the public.
- Coordinate project-specific intra- and inter-agency projects, such as design coordination, stakeholder input, permits, design presentations and approvals.
- Serve as agency-wide point person for technical consultation within the appropriate engineering field.
- Serve as Engineering Department liaison and attend meetings with architects, landscape architects, consultants, contractors, stakeholders and representatives of other agencies.
*This vacancy is only open to 1) current permanent City employees serving in the Administrative Engineer civil service title or 2) on leave from the title or 3) permanent City employees in or on leave from a comparable title with a valid New York State Professional Engineer License.

Qualifications
1. A valid New York State License as a Professional Engineer.
2. Six (6) years of full-time satisfactory experience in chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, or plan examining work, at least two (2) years of which must have been in an executive, managerial, or administrative capacity.
