Surgical/Sterile Processing Tech | Peri Op | Full Time

The Surgical/Sterile Processing Tech is a dual role with responsibilities in both Sterile Processing and the Operating Room. In Sterile Processing, they are responsible for preparing and assembling medical and surgical supplies, instrumentation, and equipment, maintaining the sterile processing areas, and receiving and distributing supplies and equipment. In the operating room, they facilitate the operative or other invasive procedure by preparing and providing the required sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment. Maintains the sterile field and anticipates and responds to the needs of the surgical team.

Responsibilities/Duties:

Sterile Processing:

• Follow established protocols for cleaning, decontaminating, preparing and packaging, disinfecting or sterilizing, and storing medical and surgical supplies and equipment.
• Distribute medical and surgical supplies from sterile processing areas to other areas within the facility as needed.
• Adhere to standard precautions, including the use of personal protective equipment.
• Follow safety procedures and manufacturer’s instructions when handling cleaning solutions, supplies, and equipment.
• Operate equipment used in the sterile processing areas safely and according to the manufacturer’s instructions for use.
• Monitor, interpret, and document results of physical, chemical, and biological indicators for all types of sterilizers used in the sterile processing areas.
• Prepare and distribute surgical case carts according to the physician’s preference lists and the anticipated needs of the perioperative team.
• Inventory, receive, and restock materials used for supporting sterile processing services.
• Assist with improving the quality of sterile processing services.
• Assist with identifying pertinent evidence to establish benchmarks as directed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Or Tech:

• Function as a scrub person during operative and other invasive procedures by:
• Clean and prepare surgical instruments for processing and transport them to the decontamination area.
• Assist with post-procedure cleaning of the operative or other invasive procedure room and preparation of the room for subsequent patients.
• Participate in ongoing educational and competency verification activities applicable to scrub person activities.
• Maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Assembling supplies and equipment required for the procedure.
• Preparing and organizing sterile supplies and instruments for the procedure.
• Performing accounting procedures in concert with the RN circulator.
• Assisting with placement of sterile drapes.
• Providing instruments and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure.
• Maintaining an organized sterile field.
• Ensuring sterility of the field and taking corrective actions as needed.
• Preparing sterile dressings.
• Rotation in Surgical Tech call schedule.

Education/Experience:

• High school graduate or equivalent is preferred
• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program or completion of the ICATAP Surgical Technologist Apprenticeship is required.
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification is preferred
• One year of sterile processing experience is preferred
• Central Supply Processing Department Technician (CSPDT) or Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification is preferred
• Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) certification is preferred
• BLS is required prior to providing patient care
