Adjudicates trading product credit transactions across the enterprise, focusing on the soundness and integrity of transactional credit granting in order to ensure the quality of the assigned portfolio. The role provides portfolio oversight ensuring adherence to risk policy and accuracy of risk rating. Provides credit counselling, coaching, training and support to frontline teams.

  • Maintains a profitable loan book while ensuring lending practices are conducted within the boundaries of the Bank’s risk appetite and tolerances, that approved loans are in accordance with sound credit-granting principles and in compliance with Bank policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Oversees the transactional credit risk function for trading products leading a team that provides independent, objective review and approval to credit applications and other related matters which have been recommended by Line Management.
  • Ensures the maintenance of required internal control standards, including adherence to audit, regulatory and compliance policies.
  • Leads various strategic initiatives from a transactional credit risk perspective, leads credit acquisition due diligence and integration activities when required, works with senior leadership to support business initiatives consistent with the Bank’s risk appetite, and provides feedback on various issues including front line skill sets
  • Monitors the trading product credit borrowing portfolio, primarily through transaction review/approval and exception reports, to ensure conformity with lending policies and procedures.
  • Reviews and ensures new related policies and procedures and/or guidelines are within the risk appetite and overall risk tolerances of the Bank.
  • Provides updates as needed to senior leadership on the status of the portfolio to identify any evolving credit quality issues.
  • Ensures Bank Corporate Policies, Corporate Standards, and Financing Guidelines are interpreted correctly by both line and credit officers, and that lending transactions meet Bank requirements to ensure the lending process functions effectively.
  • Supports the profitable lending of Bank funds and development of specific financing proposals to meet customer and Bank requirements, while balancing the requirement for loan loss experience to be maintained within prescribed quality standards.
  • Appraises front line credit capabilities to identify gaps in and training needs and provides formal and informal training as required.
  • Provides control over discretionary limits granted through recommendation/approval/signoff on Candidate Information Packages.
  • Approves recommendations regarding level of credit limits for account management.
  • Provides the necessary direction, leadership and supervision of their team with particular attention to training and development to ensure management continuity. Includes the assessment of employees to ensure employees get in-depth technical and product knowledge.
  • Maintains oversight of credit transactions of each direct report to ensure assessments and decisions are being made on a sound basis as well as to identify coaching opportunities as needed.
  • Provides credit guidance and support on any changes to policies and to ensure congruence with the investment banking group’s credit policies.
  • Displays and encourages appropriate high performance behaviours to ensure behaviours are aligned to BMO’s
  • Appropriately utilizes concurrence and relief limits, adjudicating credit transactions/applications within assigned credit limits in a timely manner.

    Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in Finance, or Chartered Account or MBA or at least 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with loan workouts, identification of early warning signals and management of problem accounts.
  • Extensive knowledge of, and experience with, Corporate Policies/Standards, Commercial Lending Process and Directives, the Bank’s credit culture and procedures, and general banking practices and regulations
  • Knowledge of regulatory environment.
  • Strongly developed business judgment.
  • Must have exercised a substantial credit approval limit in a completely satisfactory manner (i.e., must have above-average credit skills combined with extensive knowledge in commercial lending to be able to obtain required credit qualification level).
  • Must possess strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate in a professional and knowledgeable manner at all levels.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
