Make a meaningful difference to the lives of Australians in need

Life at Mission Australia

When you join the team at Mission Australia, you become part of a community who are determined to end homelessness and ensure people in need can thrive. United by our Christian purpose and values, we advocate for a fairer Australia, to meet the growing needs of people across the country. Together we’re building hope and possibility for all. Find out more about us and our purpose.

Your Opportunity

Are you a proud Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person who’s deeply connected to culture and community, someone people can trust and look to for guidance? At Mission Australia, we’re offering an opportunity to bring that strength, wisdom and leadership into a role that can create real, lasting impact in the Top End.

As our Cultural Connector, based in Garramilla (Darwin) on Larrakia Country, you’ll walk alongside our teams, the local community, and the people we support, providing cultural guidance and direct support to participants accessing our housing and community services. This First Nations identified role offers a unique opportunity to support our teams to lead culturally safe, respectful and community-led service delivery across multiple Mission Australia programs.

You’ll share cultural knowledge with our frontline teams, strengthen relationships with Larrakia Elders, Traditional Owners and other First Nations leaders and organisations from across the Top End. Your role will help ensure First Nations people feel welcomed, respected, and heard when accessing our services. From cultural events and healing spaces to hard conversations and shared planning, your presence will help us walk the right way, together. You’ll also represent Mission Australia at local, regional, and Territory-wide gatherings, making sure our work reflects the voices, values, and strengths of the communities we serve.

If you’re passionate about culture, community, and creating safer, stronger futures for people, we’d be honoured to walk this journey with you.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Support the delivery of culturally safe and respectful services across Mission Australia programs, working closely with staff to ensure First Nations participants and team members feel safe, strong, and supported.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local First Nations Elders, Traditional Owners, community leaders, and organisations to inform program design and strengthen local engagement.
  • Support and guide frontline staff and People Leaders to increase cultural capability, confidence, and culturally responsive practice.
  • Advocate for the needs of First Nations people within Mission Australia and the broader community to improve access, engagement, and outcomes.
  • Offer cultural support, mentoring and guidance to participants in a way that respects their story, strengthens connection to culture and helps them navigate services with dignity.
  • Represent Mission Australia at local, regional, and Territory-wide forums, contributing to culturally informed planning, events, and strategic partnerships.

Requirements For Success:

  • Live locally in Garramilla (Darwin) and have a strong understanding of Larrakia culture and the cultural diversity of Aboriginal communities across the Top End.
  • Be known and respected in community, with the ability to engage in a culturally safe and appropriate way with Elders, families, and local organisations.
  • Be confident supporting staff and sharing cultural guidance in a respectful way that builds understanding, not shame.
  • Have strong listening and yarning skills, and a way of working that helps people feel safe, respected, and seen.
  • Be able to manage your own wellbeing and support others in a calm, grounded way — especially when working with sensitive or complex situations.
  • Hold a current NT driver’s licence with no restrictions.

Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.

  • Volunteering Opportunities

  • Rewarding work – every day you know you’re making a real difference
