Make a meaningful difference to the lives of Australians in need

Life at Mission Australia

When you join the team at Mission Australia, you become part of a community who are determined to end homelessness and ensure people in need can thrive. United by our Christian purpose and values, we advocate for a fairer Australia, to meet the growing needs of people across the country. Together we’re building hope and possibility for all. Your Opportunity

Are you a proud Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person who’s deeply connected to culture and community, someone mob trust, and people look to for guidance? At Mission Australia, we’re offering an opportunity to bring that strength, wisdom and leadership into a role that can create real, lasting impact.

As our Cultural Connector, based in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) on Arrernte Country, you’ll walk alongside our teams, community, and the people we support, providing cultural guidance and direct support to participants accessing our housing and community services. This Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identified role offers a unique opportunity to support culturally safe, respectful, and community-led service delivery across our housing and community programs.

You’ll share cultural knowledge with our frontline teams, help strengthen relationships with Elders, Traditional Custodians and local organisations, and ensure mob feel welcomed, respected, and heard when accessing our housing and community programs. From cultural events and healing spaces to tough conversations and strategic planning, your presence will make a difference every day. You’ll also represent Mission Australia at local, regional and Territory-wide gatherings, ensuring our work reflects the needs, values, and strengths of the communities we serve.

If you’re passionate about culture, community, and creating safer, stronger futures for our people, we’d be honoured to walk this journey with you.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Support the delivery of culturally safe and respectful services across Mission Australia programs, working closely with staff to ensure First Nations participants and team members feel safe, strong, and supported.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local First Nations Elders, Traditional Custodians, community leaders, and organisations to inform program design and strengthen local engagement.
  • Support and guide frontline staff and People Leaders to increase cultural capability, confidence, and culturally responsive practice.
  • Advocate for the needs of First Nations people within Mission Australia and the broader community to improve access, engagement, and outcomes.
  • Offer cultural support, mentoring and guidance to participants in a way that respects their story, strengthens connection to culture, and helps them navigate services with dignity.
  • Represent Mission Australia at local, regional, and Territory-wide forums, contributing to culturally informed planning, events, and strategic partnerships.

Requirements For Success:

  • Live locally in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) and hold strong knowledge of Arrernte culture, language, kinship, and community ways of doing things.
  • Be known and respected in community, with the ability to engage in a culturally safe and appropriate way with Elders, families, and local organisations.
  • Be confident supporting staff and sharing cultural guidance in a respectful way that builds understanding, not shame.
  • Have strong listening and yarning skills, and a way of working that helps people feel safe, respected, and seen.
  • Be able to manage your own wellbeing and support others in a calm, grounded way — especially when working with sensitive or complex situations.
  • Hold a current NT driver’s licence with no restrictions.

Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.

Your Benefits

  • Volunteering Opportunities

  • Rewarding work – every day you know you’re making a real difference
  • Not-for-profit salary packaging, reducing your tax (details via AccessPay)
  • Free external, confidential counselling and access to chaplaincy support
  • Opportunity to purchase additional annual leave
