Position Summary:

The primary role of the Principal Mechanical Engineer is to serve as a Senior Member of the KSB’s US Water Market Area Technical Excellence Group. The expectation of the Principal Mechanical Engineer is to act as a senior-level technical leader responsible for driving system designs, developments, and optimizations of pumps and systems for Municipal Water, Wastewater and Stormwater Applications. This role combines deep expertise in mechanical engineering, fluid dynamics, rotor dynamics and system integration with strategic oversight to ensure innovative, reliable, and efficient pump solutions. The Principal Engineer collaborates internal and external stakeholders, mentors’ internal staff, and influences technical strategy to align with our business objectives.

This role supports multiple facets of internal engineering tasks not limited to including completing designs, drawings, performing calculations and modelling and supporting the detailed mechanical designs for Engineered Project Business. The Principal Mechanical Engineer will also be responsible reviewing specific specifications in comparison to KSB’s technical offers, supporting technical submittal processes used to gain customers’ approval and release to manufacture and successful installation and commissioning.

Goals & Responsibilities

  • System Design and Development: Lead the design and engineering of pump systems, including centrifugal, positive displacement, or specialized pumps, ensuring compliance with industry standards (e.g., NEMA, HI, ISO).
  • Create and maintain the US repository of Technical NEMA documentation & drawings for coupled products within KSB Water portfolio into support of KSB digital sales strategy.
  • Responsible for creation of production drawings, bills of materials, and submittal documents that pertain to fabricated structural elements of specific projects and digital need to ensure KSB Scope meets customer and market requirements.
  • Support Sales and Business Development efforts by creating preliminary installation and general arrangement drawings and designs during the entire life cycle of an opportunity or project.
  • Mentor junior and senior engineers, foster cross-team collaboration, and mediate technical disputes to ensure project success.
  • Review structural dynamics reports and lead customer/consultant facing discussions through the lifecycle of specific projects in efforts to reduce technical services lead time.
  • Preparation of technical calculations including bearing life calculations, anchor calculations, critical speed calculations, and others as needed for specific project requirements.
  • Follow and comply with processes and procedures required by the KSB Corporate Unit Pumps in Frankenthal, and serve as an extension of for the KSB North American Region
  • Perform technical calculations, analysis, and simulations locally in US while interfacing with local IT systems and collaboration with KSB’s Corporate Unit - Pumps to gather necessary component documentation and drawings.
  • Preparation and Support of Project Installation, Start Up and Commission plans, as necessary.
  • Support the project business team in accomplishing project goals while keeping the project to scope, on schedule, and within budget.
  • Keep internal and external stakeholders informed of project activities and deliverables; will flag unanticipated risks quickly to ensure appropriate risk mitigation strategies are implemented.
  • Facilitate and/or participate in meetings with customers and internal /external key stakeholders to review and define bid strategies, project scopes, project kick offs/ hand offs to ensure alignment of support as required.
  • Provide mechanical engineering expertise in design for testing and evaluation of designs and interaction with other design engineers, quality assurance, and manufacturing personnel to complete final testing and implementation of new products.
  • Other Project Design & Engineering responsibilities, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, Skills. Abilities, Licenses/ Certifications  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Related Field with 10+ years’ related experience.
  • Registered & Maintains Professional Engineer License
  • Proficiency with CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and simulation & mechanical calculation software (e.g., ANSYS, MDESIGN) for pump design and analysis.
  • Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., API 610, ASME, Hydraulic Institute standards).
  • Experience & Understanding of ERP/MRP Systems & Processes (e.g., INFOR and/or SAP Preferred)
  • 10+ Years’ Project Engineering experience within Municipal and/or Industrial Water, Wastewater & Stormwater Market required.
