General Description

Performs complex (journey level) research work with a with a goal to identify trends, issues, and effective programs and services and provide such information to internal and external users for consideration in decisions regarding the juvenile justice system. 

Work involves: planning and conducting research initiatives using a variety of qualitative and quantitative research methods; synthesizing complex data into useful information and deliverables; and producing well-written, high-quality research papers, reports, and other documents for dissemination to stakeholders and/or publication. May be required to work in excess of 40 hours per week

Essential Duties

Prepares or assists in preparing written articles on qualitative and quantitative research findings for publication in academic journals.

Conducts and reviews field surveys and interviews with staff and youth; collects, compiles, analyzes, and reports data required in the development of plans or programs.

Assists in formulating research objectives and programs; collaborates in the development of research designs, scope, methodologies, and processes used in conducting and administering research and evaluation activities; provides consultation on research methods and techniques, and data collection and coding issues and provides consultation and technical assistance on the planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of community-based programs.

Prepares data and comprehensive statistical and narrative reports for presentation for agency management, professional organizations, governmental entities, and the public.

Gather, analyze, and interpret data from a variety of sources, including academic journals, reports, articles, and internal data collection efforts, ensuring accuracy and credibility of research deliverables.

Collaborates and confers with relevant staff across the agency – and external research entities – to support agency research initiatives and amplify the agency’s mission, goals, and core values.

Collects, cleans, visualizes, and analyzes qualitative and quantitative data using a variety of data analysis software tools.

Continuously updates knowledge on the latest trends, research methodologies, and best practices relevant to program areas.

Develops data quality assurance procedures and conducts data quality assurance audits on data used by the agency and for agency projects.

Performs a variety of related duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.

Performs all duties in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures:

Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency attendance and leave policies.

Will be required to travel up to 25% of the time.

Actively embody and support the Texas Model by demonstrating its core values in daily tasks and interactions with others.

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a social, behavioral science, or other related area related to research and analytics, with courses in research methods and statistical techniques. Two (2) years of full-time wage-earning experience in applied research, research planning or design, data/statistical analysis, or academic research writing.

Or

Master’s degree in a social, behavioral science, or other related area related to research and analytics, with courses in research methods and statistical techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in academic writing for publication in research journals.
  • Experience using survey software (e.g., Qualtrics, Microsoft Forms)
  • Experience using BI tools (e.g., PowerBI) and/or statistical software (e.g., SPSS, R).
  • Experience in data analysis, research, compilation, and/or reporting work.

Experience And Education Substitutions:

Completed course hours of graduate study may be substituted for up to two years of experience on a basis of 12 graduate course hours for one year of experience.

One year of appropriate experience may substitute for one year of college (30 course hours) on a year for year basis.

Completion of data analysis or data science ‘boot camp’ program or related coursework may count toward years of experience depending on hours of study and content of program.

Note:  Any degree, diploma, high school equivalent, or course hours required to meet minimum qualifications must be from an accredited educational institution.

  • Ability to plan, organize and oversee research projects and evaluate research data.
  • Ability to ensure the development of measuring instruments with respect to reliability, relevance, and validity.
  • Ability to interpret and publish research findings.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all stakeholders and maintain a professional, courteous demeanor.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to process information logically, make decisions, and demonstrate the soundness of those decisions.
  • Ability to travel on an occasional to moderate basis.
