Job Overview:

 Responsible for preparing for, assisting during, and cleaning up after surgical procedures. Provides patient care in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, and standards of care.

Job Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent

Graduate of an accredited school of surgical technology

One Of The Following:

Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology & Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)

Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST)

Job Responsibilities:

Prepares operating room with equipment, instruments, and supplies in accordance with procedure and preference card.

May function as a scrub technician or assist with circulating duties under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). Does NOT function as first assistant in a procedure.

Actively participates in TIME OUT prior to incision and/or procedure start.

Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and/or first assistant; and handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment utilized during the surgical procedure.

Demonstrates advanced knowledge of aseptic technique and maintains the sterile field.

Operates equipment as applicable, including sterilizers. Restocks and monitors correct usage of equipment and supplies.

Acquires additional supplies and equipment during operation as required.

Assists with positioning and bed transfers of patients using proper body mechanics and safety.

Maintains a safe environment for patients and personnel by utilizing and enforcing principles of infection control and safety practices, including universal precautions.

Collaborates with staff and physicians to ensure seamless patient flow.

Maintains order in work area during procedures.

Assists physician with splint or cast application.

Assists with cleansing wounds and applying dressings.

Performs sponge, sharps, and instrument counts according to policy.

Performs a Hand-off Communication before relief of duties (i.e., lunch, end of shift).

Handles specimens appropriately and according to policy.

Performs decontamination of instruments and equipment according to standards of practice.

Must be available for on-call duties; must be able to arrive in the department within 20 minutes of notification.

Assists in maintaining operative records and preference cards.

Participates in the department’s Performance Improvement Plan as appropriate to the job responsibilities, including Quality Measures and Customer Service Measures.

Initiate emergency calls when needed.

Maintains competency through departmental and organizational core competencies. Completes all required education and keeps education file up to date.

Answers the telephone calls promptly and courteously and takes messages as appropriate.
